Scorecard

Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v West Herts III on Sat 26 May 2018 at 01:00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 44 runs.

Match report Northwood Town's 2s were excited to play their 1st game at home this season. Town lost the toss and were asked to bat first. Going by the look of the pitch, it was expected that its gonna be a tough day in the office for the batsmen. Vinodh started positively by smashing a boundary and then a massive six to Herts opening bowler but soon fell trying to clear the boundary again. Fozan and Ravi started to build the innings and scoring was not easy due to the bounce that bowlers were getting with the new ball from the length deliveries and it was quite steep from down the hill even from the full length. Fozan and Ravi rode the opening spell from the Herts bowlers who were very accurate with there deliveries making it a nightmare for the batsmen. Ravi who was leaving the deliveries well so far, finally ran out of luck and gloved one to the keeper that rose from the full length leaving the scoreline 43 for 2 in 15 overs. The next two batsmen Pandey and Tanveer both fell to the similar delivers cheaply, leaving Town in a state of bother at 49 for 4 in 17 overs. Sunny arrived at crease and started to build the innings with Fozan who was looking solid so far. Together they put on 26 valuable runs before Sunny fell trying to glance a full delivery and that opened the flood gates as Fozan too fell shortly followed by Ram and Sajid. Harish on the other end was playing smart cricket by punishing anything loose and defending the good ones. He build two crucial innings with Keval and Shameer taking Town to a defendable total of 122 before he finally got out in 41st over.

Town felt that they were short 20 to 30 runs but believed they had enough on the board to make a good game, given their bowling strength. After a lovely tea break, the new ball was shared between Sajid and Shahmeer. Both started bowling as if they have grown-up playing on this pitch, putting the ball where it mattered the most. Soon Malik got rewarded in his second over with a double strike, thanks to some good catching by Harish and Vinodh. It was very evident that every run on this pitch is going to be gold dust and putting the ball on good length was absolutely key for bowlers to succeed. Syed who was sticking to the plan, finally got rewarded with not just 1 but 3 wickets in quick succession, leaving Herts shattered on 17 for 5 in 15 overs. Change of bowling introduced Sunny and Keval who both carried on from where the opening bowlers left, specially Keval who was again hitting the good length quite beautifully making it unplayable for the batsmen and was soon rewarded with 2 wickets in 2 successive overs and Herts were 36 for 7 in 17 overs. At this point, the scorecard, Town players and everybody else assumed that game was over but as we were playing cricket and often the case, that was not to be the case. Herts no. 8 & 9 had some other ideas. A mix of complacency and lack of energy helped the batsmen to build the innings while Town were in a hope that the next wickets will be gifted to them but they forgot that this is something only they could gift themselves and nobody else. Herts made full use of this situation and built a good partnership of 39 runs without loosing any further wickets. In mean while Town tried to rotate their bowlers in desperate search of a break through and toiled hard for 17 overs without any success. Re-introduction of Keval finally ended the partnership with a beautiful delivery taking the edge of No 8 and settling nicely in the safe hands of Vinodh who took another sharp catch in the slips. Finally the hard work was rewarded and next couple of wickets followed soon going a piece each to Shahmeer and Keval.

In the end, it was a sweet victory for the Town, winning the game by 44 runs. It was a massive team effort, brilliant energy levels, equally well finding and catching in the game. Really proud of the boys and their efforts. If this is the level of energy and intensity we are going to bring in every game, we are going to be a very happy team.

Next stop Redbourn, who are sitting at No 2. Lets carry the energy and momentum into the next game and take that No 2 spot!

Upwards & Onwards!
