Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Northchurch II on Sat 30 Jun 2018 at 01:00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets.

Match report On a streak of lovely sunny days, town’s 2nd XI welcomed their Northchurch counterparts at Chestnut Av. After winning the toss town had no hesitation in batting 1st, taking some inspiration from their 1st XI. Town started with Mekwan & Ramawat and they both started very positively. No pries for guessing, it was Mekwan who flayed the Northchurch’s opening attach with his classic front foot drives and lofted shots. Ramawat on the other had was happy to give Mekwan all the calmness that he needed without any luck. Town soon raced to 67 in 10 overs without losing any wickets. By this time, Mekwan was looking like getting to his prime by leaving or defending anything that was tight but played his shots on anything loose or in his zone. The partnership finally ended in 18th over when Ramawat was caught behind on 28 to a Shoaib Akhtar look-a-like. Haji joined Mekwan and latter continued his show but was unfortunate to get out on 91, a fine innings by Mekwan leaving town score line 135 for 2 in 24 overs. Two seasoned pro, Haji & Pandey in the middle, the expectation was to keep the scoreboard ticking and build a partnership again but Pandey was very unfortunate that he fell lbw without any real appeal from the fielders. S. Patel, joined the middle and together with Haji took their time to ensure no further wickets were given to avoid familiar middle order collapse. In the 38th over as soon as they thought of increasing the run rate, both of them got out in the same over denting towns aspiration of a 250+ score. It was 188 for 5 in 40 overs. R. Patel played really well with the rest of the batsmen to take town’s total to 225 in 49th over. A score that was 20 to 30 runs short but acceptable as it was felt defendable. Nonetheless a lovely trademark Marjorie tea was waiting and opposition were delighted after a hard toil in sun.

Town started with experienced attach in the form of Malik & Syed and Nothchurch came out with twins who not only looked similar but also had an identical batting style – ‘hit at everything and take your chances’ which they did with both hands, shame couldn’t be said the same about town as they dropped 6 chances that the openers presented them. Soon town found themselves in the familiar territory of not being able to break open the top order as it has been the case in the last 3 matches. The twin duo made most of town’s hospitality and collected 157 between them before one of them finally got caught trying one shot too many but by this time, the opposition openers had provided a fantastic platform for them. As always there was a twist to come, town collected some quick wickets in next few overs as suddenly scoring runs became difficult and boundaries dried-out, opposition were 4 down with 183 on board with still 45 to score in next 10 overs. At this crucial junction, town’s other nemesis struck in the form of 'luck with umpiring', as it has been the case, no further close lbws and few tight calls on extras ensured the Church crossed the line very nervously with 3 overs to spare and without losing any further wickets.

It was hard to take the defeat but we were the only ones to blame as not only we were short of few runs but importantly, we dropped as many as 7 chances to let opposition run away with the game. A lot to take from this game, batsmen to work hard on their individual game and more midweek practice on catching. We know we are a good side and a lot of cricket in us, its just a matter of taking some time to reflect on few things and giving our best in the middle.

On-wards & upwards!
