Cheshunt Rosedale v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 29 Aug 2020 at 1:00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 4 runs
Match report
Northwood Town 1s travelled to Cheshunt Rosedale this week knowing only a victory will keep their hopes alive of finishing top of the table. Going by the history between these two teams it was always going be a tightly fought game with lots of ups-downs throughout. What also didn’t help was the weather conditions with the temperature barely hovering above 12 degrees. Last time Town played a game in conditions like this KP was in his mid 20s, Akshay had hair and Burty was still making 150 mile round trips to Brighton on Friday nights. To make things worse Town were asked to bat first after losing the toss.
It was quite obvious from the first ball that it wasn’t going to be an easy wicket to bat on and on top of that, Town were facing a very disciplined bowling attack which didn’t give them anything. Loomba went from last weeks high to this weeks low departing early, barely troubling the scorer (sparking wild celebrations in Baker Street by Towns so called loyal supporter Randy as he edged closer to winning his batting average bet with Loomba). Yet again, like many times this season it was down to the in-form duo of Vadgama and Modi to build an innings and get Town to a respectable total. The pair kept grinding it ball after ball and put on a 57 runs partnership in 19 overs - yet again an indication of how difficult it was going to be. Vadgama (28) departed shortly after leaving Town on 71/2 after 25 overs. What followed next was typical middle order collapse. B365 have taken the markets out for any bets on Town middle order surviving more than 6-8 overs as no punter would go for it at odds on. Modi, Halai, Unalkat and Burty all got out within the space of 9 overs to leave Town on 107/6. Modi though departing trying to up the ante after a fine grafted innings of 32. Although conditions were difficult Town were in danger of posting a below par total and not give their bowlers a chance to bowl at something. But a very entertaining partnership between Lawrence (24) and M Patel (22) shifted the momentum and runs started to come quickly. Both batsmen made it look easy by playing shots all around the ground including a usual text book inside out cover drive from Patel and lovely straight drives from Lawrence. Eventually Town closed their inning setting Cheshunt a target of 156 which wasn’t going to be easy to chase but also required Town bowlers to be on the money from the first ball.
Town’s opening bowling pair of Daly and Lawrence started very well where runs were hard to come by. With light persistent rain it was getting more difficult for the Cheshunt batters to keep the scoreboard ticking. We all know at Town how much Daly loves bowling to left handers and today was no different as he got Cheshunts left handed opening bat with Unalkat saving himself a TFC by taking a very good low diving catch. Lawrence on the other hand was unlucky again with a very close LBW. Judging by how unlucky he’s been with LBWs B365 are offering a market of him getting 1+ LBW in 2 remaining league games at an odds of 8/1 (some would say lump job). Despite chasing a low score Cheshunt lost their 2nd wicket after 18 overs having just put 43 on the board. Chesdale’s no 3 Dean and no 4 Grant put on a great partnership of 64 although it did eat up 17.4 overs to do so. At this stage it was clear Town needed a wicket and up stepped Town’s PART-TIME bowler Vadgama who removed Dean after he scored well fought 66. On the other end after a terrible first over and bit of a dressing down from Loomba - Town’s spin king (self proclaimed) KP gave a masterclass on how to bowl in a tough wet conditions by turning the screw which included a yet ANOTHER drop catch (5th of the season) by Vadgama who’s determined to make sure he beats KP to top wicket taker for the 1s. Soon after Town’s best fielder Daly took an absolute belter at deep extra cover to remove dangerous Grant giving KP brilliant figures of 2/26 in 9 overs. Vadgama bowled an even better spell than that with 1/13 in 9 overs. M Patel given the ball from 1 end as Lawrence looked like he was struggling in the field with an injury (regular occurrence but still finishes his spell) as Loomba wasn’t sure if he’ll be able to bowl again. M Patel proved expensive as he started bowling half trackers (which ended Loomba’s bowling career few years ago) conceding 26 in just 3 overs giving Cheshunt a sniff at chasing down the total. But with couple of run-outs (Burty and Modi) after that and a great 2nd spell from Town seamers Daly, Shah and Lawrence made sure Town won the game restricting Chesdale to final total of 152.
Victory meant next week is a cup final between Town and Finchley to finish top of the table. Loomba spoke after the game: “It’s always nice scoring lots of runs in easy conditions and defending that easily for a win but days like this in tough conditions having to really fight for the win make it even sweeter. The fielding effort was one of the best I’ve seen this season and we’re looking forward to the crunch game next week. On his personal batting form: It’s not about how you go down it’s about how you get back and I’m going to score a ton next week!”
