Botany Bay v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 15 May 2021 at 12:00 pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 3 runs on NRR (Rain interrupted)

Match report Wet weather being persistent over the last few weeks, Town arrived at Botany Bay expecting a tough game. Town won the toss and elected to field. New ball reunited our olden goldies Malik & Pandey. Malik as usual was accurate from the ball one but it took our vintage Cadillac couple of overs to get going. Bay openers made a cautious start but put away every loose deliver to the boundary. Pandey got town a deserving break when he caught Mullen of his own bowling. Harris who was looking very sold and determined on the other end got out to a superb catch by Janardhan at covers of Malik and Halai making his bowling debut for the 2s got Bay no 3 cleaned up early. At the end of the 15th over Bay were 55/3.

Bay middle order started applying themselves and although Halai kept things tight from one end, town kept giving loose deliveries from the other end which Bay batsmen made full use of. By the end of 30th over Bay were 150/3. At this stage they looked set to score 230+. Aggarwal & Anjum into the attack, Aggarwal bowled some tight lines and halted the Bay charge, Anjum specially his second spell when he started showing his swing skills. Both were rewarded for their fine bowling and got the two set batsmen out 185/5 in 35 overs. Next Bay batsmen found going hard and ended up with 222 in 45 over with the loss of 8 wickets. Town certainly dragged the score back by at least 30/40 runs. Great effort with the ball by Halai, Aggarwal & Anjum.

A score, town felt was well within their reach and were confident of the chase. Town started their innings with Gairola and Halai and although both were cautious early on but looked good against a decent opening attack. Together they gave town a solid start, putting 50 on board in 8 overs before Halai got out caught behind to a very confusing situation. Janardhan walked in to keep the momentum going but he too got out on a silly run out. Ramawat joined Gairola in the middle, who was well set and was putting anything loose away to the rope. Spinners from both ends, bowling tight lines, both Gairola and Ramawat found it hard to rotate the strike. Ramawat eventually fell to the pressure trying to stay at par with the run rate when the score was 83 in the 18th over. Verma walked in with some good memories on this ground, carried on from where he had left last time. He smashed anything loose and got the scoring up very quickly and in the next 12 overs with Gairola together they collected 70 odd runs. Just when things looked on autopilot mode, Verma got out leaving town scoreline 150/3 in the 30th over.

Anjum walked in the middle with Gairola who was well set on the other end with town needing 63 runs in 12 overs with 6 wickets in hand, the batting that was to come and an understanding that they were ahead on the D/L at every point since the last 10 overs, town looked all set for a comfortable win.

Rain gods on the other hand had some other plans and heavens opened, flooded the pitch and the outfield with no effort to put the covers back on it was clear that the game was all but over. Town came off the the field feeling they had won the game but only to be told by the opposition that its actually them who have won the game. A massive shock for town as they assumed it was D/L that would decide the faith but little they knew that at their division, league have kept things very simple - NRR for rain interrupted games.

At the end of the game, town felt they were robbed of a win, a tough game that they played so hard & well and were set for a win but that was not to be the case today. Had they known that the rain result would be decided by NRR and not DL, may be things would have been different but hey who knows... we may find out another day. A massive effort from town while bowling, considering town were short of a few bowlers and a superb run chase, set by Gairola, Halai and Verma with Anjum, Aggarwal, Pandey and rest to come, what could have been 30 points ended up with 12. Although a disappointing result for the town but the heads are high, spirits are flying and we march on....
