Ware v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 18 May 2013 at 1 pm
Match was Drawn

Match report Northwood Town fell one wicket short of recording their first league victory of the season but picked up 19 valuable points after a dominant performance against Ware.

Put in to bat on a slow wicket, in-form Akshay Loomba (20) looked in good touch again but a couple of early wickets and a tight spell from the Ware opening bowlers had Town in trouble. Enter Sangeet Patel who took the attack to the opposition and changed the game with a sublime innings of 97 which included a number of sumptuous off drives and two huge sixes as the Ware fielders struggled to set a field which could cope with Sangeet's array of shots. Sangeet was well supported by Kyle Lawrence (25) and Phil Carter (33) who both kept up the momentum by regularly finding the boundary, Carter opening his account by bludgeoning a straight six over the bowler's head. Once Sangeet departed, Mikhil Patel came to the crease and played a delightful cameo of 38 not out which included two sweetly-timed sixes and helped Town post an impressive total of 251 off the allotted 53 overs.

In reply, Ware made no attempt to chase down the runs and settled on a game plan of trying to frustrate the bowlers. Town went on the attack early, utilising the spin threat of Geet Patel, Mikhil Patel and Raj Kotecha, with several fielders around the bat. The Ware batsmen struggled to cope and wickets fell at regular intervals with Mikhil Patel (4-53) bowling particularly well. After some dogged resistance from Ware's lower order who were starting to read the spin, the ball was thrown to Kyle Lawrence who picked up 3 important wickets in an aggressive spell of seam bowling. After picking up Khan for a duck in the penultimate over, Town sensed that victory may be theirs but the last two batsmen held out for Ware and Town eventually ran out of overs and had to settle for a draw.

Town skipper, Michael Lister, was pleased with the performance: "I asked the top 6 to show more application and that's exactly what they delivered. We didn't get the last wicket but we were dominant throughout and Sangeet's innings was a joy to watch."
