Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v NTCC 1st XI on Sat 04 May 2024 at 1:00 p.m.
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 14 runs

Match report The persistent wet weather continued to wreak havoc and disrupt playing conditions, casting doubts on whether the match would proceed. Despite a more promising outlook on Saturday, the lingering effects of the rain from Thursday and Friday led to the unfortunate cancellation of the game by the opposition.

Undeterred by the weather's unpredictability, 26 eager cricketers gathered, many of whom had yet to face a single delivery as the league season loomed on the horizon, set to commence on the 11th of May. In light of the circumstances, a decision was made to organize an interclub game on the Astor turf, providing much-needed game practice.

Town's 2nd XI won the toss and decided to bat first. Jay Patel and Tushar Shah opened the batting for the 2nd XI, facing Nischay Madhavan and Ibaad Kayani from the 1st XI. Patel was unlucky to get out very early on, but that paved the way for the ever-reliable Anjum, who got the business going by rotating the strike and stitched a decent partnership with Shah (15), who got out to a clever piece by Malik. In came Cijin, who matched Anjum's energy and rotated the strike really well, especially during a phase when both Saad and Viral were bowling tight lines and lengths. Both took the 2nd XI score to 90 in 20 overs, but both got out in quick succession in order to accelerate. Ravi walked in at no. 5 in a very unfamiliar and demanding situation where the need of the hour was to accelerate and score quick runs in order for the 2nd XI to post a decent total, which they did courtesy Krunal Power (23*) with his powerful stroke making. Together with skipper Ravi(44*) they collected 55 runs in the last 5 overs giving 2nd XI a very good total of 164/6 in their 30 overs.

A quick break, and the 1st XI began the run chase, with Loomba and Smith Patel to face Keval & Asadullah from the 2nd XI. Loomba cracked a lovely boundary by cutting Keval in his 1st over, showing his ominous touch and looked dangerous. Asad bowled with some good control and pace and troubled both Loomba and Patel. In his 2nd over, Asad uprooted Loomba's middle stump who shoulder-armed the ball 😂, a delight for any pacer. In came Town's own Hardik Pandya and as the story has been with the other 'Pandya', he too couldn't trouble the scorecard and was cleaned up by another Asad beauty. Another Town debutant Arindum, who too couldn't move the score forward and was judged lbw for Keval, who settled into a good rhythm by this time. At the end of 8 overs, Town 1st XI were 37/3. Walked in Ibaad Kayani at no 5 and immediately got the scorecard moving with S Patel, who was batting beautifully on the other end after grinding out a fine spell of bowling from Keval and Asad. Together they collected 40 runs in the next 4 overs putting the chase back on track - 75/3 in 14 overs.

Desperate to break this partnership, skipper Ravi Ramawat turned to Town's most trusted spin duo, Anjum & Mr. Power. Between them, they plugged both ends and suffocated the run chase. The next 12 overs were a perfect demonstration of what happens when 2 fine spin bowlers bowl in tandem. Both set batsmen couldn't get going while the required run rate kept increasing and ultimately got out to some fine bowling. At the end of Anjum's and Puwar's full bowling quota, 1st XI were 122/5, needing 44 in the last 4 overs. Game perfectly poised at this time with 1st XI skipper Madhavan well settled by now showing full determination to hunt this score down. 2nd XI skipper brought his pace attack back into the business at the exciting phase of the game and Madhavan kept the excitement high by scored 15 runs in the 27th over from Asad but that was the closest they got to the victory as the last 3 overs by Keval and John just killed the game for them.

A great day out and much-needed time in the middle for Town's 26 players. Both skippers felt that it was a great game and presented an opportunity for everyone to test their skills and we all got something out of this game. Although not ideal going into the league next Saturday, but a close and hard fought game is exactly what the Doctor had ordered before the much important and awaited league start.

A massive thanks to all for getting this game ON and a special shout out to Pathik Vyas and Meet Agarwal for umpiring and conducting the game beautifully.

We move on.
