Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Welwyn Garden City II on Sat 03 Jun 2023 at 12pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 1 wicket

Match report Town won the toss on a good track on a warm day and chose to bat.

A spell of quick and accurate bowling from Holding, hitting the ridge and getting the ball to bounce a little extra caused Town batsmen issues, with Agarwal nicking off and not troubling the scorers. Loomba soon followed making it 29/1 with a leading edge to a leaping mid wicket before Madhavan (39/3) also nicked off to the keeper. The domino effect continued with Gairola, Anjum, Burt and Lawrence scoring 1 run between them and quickly losing Vadgama stumped for 13 and town reeling on 58/8. A brief cameo from Mikhil who showed some fight but sadly ran out of partners, left town all out on a measly 71 runs.

In response, Town showed great character, showing belief that anything is possible in this great game and Lawrence opened up with Anjum as a differential and caused the Welwyn batsmen issues early on. With Kyle sporting a thigh injury, he managed to bowl 4 overs and take 2 batsmen with him and Anjum continued to show his red hot bowling form with Welwyn feeling the pressure at 6/3. The introduction of Madhavan continued to cause wickets to tumble and regular bowling changes also saw a brief spell from Vadgama and town continued to keep runs down and take wickets at regular intervals. Daly, who is used to opening the bowling, came on as the fifth bowler and also caused problems, taking the scalp of Hewitt soon followed by Lewis thanks to a good Vadgama delivery and a good catch under pressure from Anjum.

With town needing 1 wicket and Welwyn just two runs, A heave to legside from Patel secured the victory for the away side.

Loomba spoke after the game: 'We let ourselves down with the bat again and the lack of application from our batsmen is baffling - it needs fixing asap. That said, the fight and character shown in the second half is something I am incredibly proud of - every player pulled together and almost snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. We will take plenty of positives from this bowling and fielding performance and look to get back to winning ways next week.
