50 Years of NTCC: Richard Robbins Tribute

09 Feb 2024

On 10th September 2023, Northwood Town Cricket Club members past and present joined together for a special 50th anniversary Celebration Day to honour those no longer with us. As part of the event, tribute speeches were made to highlight the outstanding and selfless contributions to the club made by several individuals.

Here's former Club Captain Akshay Loomba's words on Richard 'Rockin' Robbins...

"There were three versions of Richard Robbins that I knew.

The first version was Rich the cricketer. He joined in 2009 and played most of his cricket between the 1s and the 2s. He was present during my adult debut v Old Finchlaiens, scoring 42 and saving us from defeat (we could draw matches in those days!). He was a destructive top order batsman and didn’t waste too many balls and hit the ball very hard. It was a real pleasure playing cricket alongside Rich!

The second version is Rich the club man. It is hard to find a more dedicated and hard working member of this committee past or present. Rich really cared deeply for this club and a lot of his influence is still here today. We now have the Richard Robbins Award hanging on our wall in the clubhouse. A shield that is awarded to essentially, the clubman of the year in honour of one of the greatest clubmen this club has had in recent times. Often as life goes on and priorities change, I personally have felt like removing myself from the committee duties but a voice in my head encourages me not to waste the tireless work that Richard Robbins has done and to continue making this club better each year.

Finally, my favourite version of Rich, and this is Richard Robbins the bloke. He was a genuine good guy, loved by everyone at the club. He was welcoming, helpful, a good laugh, always had good energy about him and rarely saw him without a smile on his face.

Sadly we lost Rich far too young to Leukaemia but I would like to raise a glass and toast to a fantastic man."
