Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 125 runs

Match report Witnessed by the picturesque backdrop of Ashridge castle, Town took to the field first and lost by a large 125 runs on a largely forgettable day, but with a few positives.

After a neat catch by Mekwan to remove one of the opposition’s openers early, Town let two crucial back-to-back partnerships form on the back of some average bowling, fielding and catching. However, as the day wore on, there was a notable improvement in both the bowling and the fielding. Havan Patel and Shahmeer Syed in particular came back to have strong latter and second spells respectively. Conor O’Neill was also finally rewarded with two wickets, having bowled well but rewardlessly in his previous two games for Town III. Mark McInnes took his first catch of the season, as did Vikash Bakrania, whose fielding has been exemplary in both his games so far. The opposition ended its innings at 225/7 in its allotted 35 overs.

In response, Town was bundled out for 99 in 26 overs. The response was led by Taz Katira, with Suvin Mekwan and Havan Patel also chipping in with entertaining cameos. However, for the third game running Town III struggled to bat out its allotted overs – and the challenge going forward for its batsmen remains to focus on working on shot selection to help build longer innings. Conor O’Niell and Shahmeer Syed once again batted with maturity down the order - the latter, much like the former, now pushing for a promotion higher up the order.

Town III continue to show snippets of high quality and the aim going forward will be produce that level of cricket with more consistency. It was heartening to see 5 of the 11 players skipping their beers after the game in order to get in some net practice. More are due to practice later in the week. The signs are all very positive – and the challenge over the next few weeks will be to transform that enthusiasm and hard work off the pitch into strong performances on the field.
