Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI v Botany Bay IV on Sat 07 May 2011 at 1.00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 7 runs
Match report
Northwood Town III lost the toss and were asked to field by Botany Bay IV. Against an opposition known for the skills of its key batsmen and on a flat deck which offered little support to bowlers, Northwood Town’s bowlers held their own. Although Botany Bay’s openers made 88 and 127, respectively, Northwood Town’s tight lines and lengths ensured that despite their longevity, they were never able to push the run-rate significantly above 5-an-over.
Of particular note were the bowling performances of Mitesh Parmar (2/37 off 8) and Meeth Katira (1/35 off 10). Parmar in particular bowled wicket-to-wicket, ball-after-ball, and allowed the batsmen very little room to manoeuvre. He was justly rewarded with two wickets in his second spell. Katira, bowling from a difficult end, consistently swung it away from the right-handers, leading to many plays-and-misses, and ultimately got his wicket from one that hit the seam and cut back in. Patrick Rooke and Sam Brenton showed that the pitch did have some support for spinners when bowled in the right areas, with more to come from them during the course of the season.
Chasing 247 from their allotted 46 overs, Town lost its top order quickly (3/36 after 10), but Rajul Patel (30, 5x4s) ensured that Town’s run-rate did not dip below 4-an-over in the first 15 overs (4/59). “Vice-Captain Cool” looked calm and composed at the crease, scoring both singles and boundaries with relative ease.
Once Patel was bizarrely dismissed (for my life’s sake, I won’t make him re-live it by mentioning details here), the second third of Town’s inning was centred around Patrick Rooke (45, 7x4s) and Tarang Katira (87, 1x6, 10x4s) playing a re-building role, playing risk-free cricket and ensuring that the run-rate ticked along (4/93 after 25 overs).
What ensued from there was a decision from Katira and Rooke to go into over-drive mode, as, triggered by a 20-run over from Katira against captain-counterpart Hicks, the two went on to score 107 runs between them over the next 12 overs at a run-rate touching 9-an-over. Rooke continued to play the sheet-anchor role, while, Katira, after reaching his 50, was happy to take the areal route against Bay’s bowlers.
Town’s batsmen continued the good work of the chase even after the Katira-Rooke 136-run partnership ended. Vipul Patel (12) in particular showed that his legendary power and hand-eye-coordination was intact, and Sam Brenton (8) played a determined role.
Needing 16 runs off the last 4 overs with 3 wickets in hand, Northwood Town fell short by 7 runs, going for the win. However, there were plenty of positives that came from the game. Town’s bowlers bowled well, Town certainly out-fielded the opposition, certain batsmen got a good run on Town’s new astro-turf wicket, while the experience of others batting under such a pressure-cooker situation will only serve them well going forward.
Overall an excellent display which even led to the opposition confirming on a number of occasions that this was definitely Northwood Town III’s first league game. Chin up boys – a performance to be proud of. The next result is coming our way.
