Frogmore II v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 02 Jul 2011 at 1.00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets

Match report Northwood Town lost the toss and were asked to bat first. Ed Johnson (15), debuting for the 3s, provided a fiery start to Town’s innings, but Town soon found itself in a pickle at 40/4, with three of Town’s top 5 getting ducks against a disciplined bowling attack on a pitch that offered a little bit for the bowlers early on. Town could have easily been bowled out sub-100.

Along came Mr. Consistent Rajul Patel (39) to the rescue, in yet another solid knock, anchoring Town’s inning and bringing it back on track. With his second consecutive score of circa-40, he has now surpassed the skipper as the highest-averaging 3s batsmen in all games for Town in 2011.

He was well-supported by the middle-order pair of Vipul Patel (17) and Skantha Sundaralingam (16), both of whom looked very promising in their stays at the crease – a big positive for Town going forward.

Despite the efforts of Johnson (nickname tbc), Mr. Consistent, Master Blaster and Prax II, Town was in a real danger of being bowled out in less than 40 overs.

In yet another display of the 3s refusing to bow down to bullies, Sam Brenton (8*) and Meeth Katira (15), batting at 10 and 11, made sure Town used all of their allotted overs, and helped themselves to a few breath-taking shots along the way. Town had managed to cross 150 on a day where the skipper would have taken 120 after the fourth wicket fell. Excellent resistance.

Town’s bowling effort started well, with Meeth Katira (0/32 off 11) and Mitesh Parmar (1/40 off 12), bowling their usual tight lines and lengths. The pressure continued from first change bowlers Tarang Katira (2/39 off 10) and Sundaralingam (2/9 off 7), keeping the opposition in check for a long time on a track which had flattened out as the day went along.

However, most noteworthy was yet another solid effort in the field, as Town affected as many as 3 run-outs in the day – which must be close to Northwood Town’s all-time record for the club as a whole! Of course, it could easily have been 4 – had the square leg umpire raised his finger to one which everyone in a 2-mile radius (probably including him) knew was out. Ask Rao Ganisetti – he still hasn’t put his shirt back on after his premature celebrations.

Town lost in the end in the final over of the game, effectively to two batsmen who swung their bats, and swung their bats well. It’s bound to happen in an average-scoring game now and then at Division 14 level. No harm done. Back to home advantage for the next game.
