Southill Park Cricket Club v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 13 Aug 2011 at TBC
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets

Match report Northwood Town III won the toss and elected to bat in this friendly against Writte 3s. In a game where Town mixed up its line-up so it’s four bowlers, Meeth Katira, Tarang Katira, Mitesh Parmar and Prakash Tailor all batted in the top 8, while Amit Parmar and Humay Jairazbhoy bowled their first overs for the 3s for the season, Town lost with 9 balls to spare.

Batting first, Town made 155 in its allotted 40 overs, with Tarang Katira (44, 3x4s) holding the top order together on a pitch which offered variable pace and bounce. With not many more contributions from the top order, Town found itself at 75 for 6 after 27 overs.

However, a strong lower-middle order contribution from aggressive debutant Kunal Sanghi (33, 1x6, 3x4s) brought Town right back in contention. Prakash Tailor (29 not out, 4x4s), promoted up the order, also showed his persistent push for the promotion was justified, with a very sensible inning, farming strike brilliantly – first, handing it to an aggressive Sanghi early in the overs, and then facing most of it while the tail was in the middle.

Of honest mention was also some very good bowling from some young bowlers in the opposition – from big turning leggies, to consistent back of a length away-swing bowling. The fielding from the youngsters was also exemplary.

Town’s bowling started off well; with the first ball of the inning, Meeth Katira (19/0 off 8 overs) produced a snorter to hit the opening batsman on his elbow. Prakash Tailor (19/1), opening at the other end, also dashed his image of a gentle giant, by hitting the other opening batsman – an 8-year-old – in his sensitive areas. The next ball, the young lad was out bowled.

The only other bowler worth mention was (yet again) Mitesh Parmar (26/1 off 8), who was yet again very consistent in the lines and lengths he bowled.

Unfortunately, there was not much more in Town’s bowling (unaided by an unsaid no-LBWs rule enforced by the opposition). Tarang Katira and Rao Ganisetti (despite his intimidating “THAT WAS OUT!!” appealing against a very young umpire) were off-colour. Debutant Arjun Sahai bowled with pace but lacked control in his first game. Amit Parmar, bowling his first over ever for Town, was mostly accurate and almost ended up with table-topping figures.

On the whole, a fun game out for all those who participated. Given the big re-jigging of Town’s order (2 of Town’s regular top 3 batted at 9 and 11), Town put up a good fight, and Prakash Tailor’s all round brilliance would earn him “Town’s Man-of-the-Match” award.

Well done Town – back to seriousness next week!
