Match report TOWN'S 1ST X1 finally got a game of cricket under their belts as they opened up the league season at a damp Hatfield Hyde. Winning the toss, skipper David Bushnell elected to ask the hosts to bat on what was bound to be a tricky track.
Bushnell himself took 3-40 as Hyde struggled to get any sort of momentum going. But it was Richard Doling who made the most impact with an outstanding 6-23 off 12 overs. Only the opener Carr for the hosts made an impression with a hard fought 44 - and this was to prove crucial at the final reckoning. Hyde were dismissed for just 85 off 38 overs.

In reply, Town knew they would have to play a patient game and they certainly had enough overs to keep disciplined. Their approach was certainly cautious as they crept up to 53-3 with plenty of overs in hand. However the dismissal of Phil Carter (12) was to lead to a calamitous collapse. The hosts sensed a chance of victory as the middle order couldnt cope with the responsibility and found themselves in tatters at 58-8. Bushnell was Town's last hope but he was disappointingly given caught out when the ball had clearly been grounded. The visitors were shot and could only muster 65, giving Hyde an unlikely victory.

Bushnell was disappointed with the manner of defeat:

"Chasing such a low total it's really up to the top order to get us home but it was difficult out there and obviously there is some disappointment when four lbw decisions are given and other factors conspire against you. The weather has stopped us getting any sort of outdoor practice in which meant we were rusty but this early knockback should mean we are motivated to push on from this disappointment"
