Match report Northwood Town's second string produced an excellent all round display to beat early season table toppers Baldock II by 91 runs on a scorching afternoon at Chestnut Avenue. Andy Burt and Shahmeer Syed were the stars for Town but skipper Ravi Ramawat will have been delighted with the contributions from the team as a whole.

The game didn't get underway until gone 2pm as the visitors waited for a full quota of players after the closure of the M1 motorway. Ramawat won the toss and elected to bat. The wicket looked a belter and Town were keen to post a competitive total. Things didn't look good early on however as they lost openers openers Kunal Sanghi and Bobby Graham in quick succession. That brought the skipper and Andy Burt to the crease and the pair grafted relentlessly in the afternoon sun. It was not until the midway point in the innings that the 100 came up for Town but crucially they had wickets in hand. Ramawat edged behind for 47 as he and Burt put on 78 for the third wicket but the pace picked up somewhat when Richard Robbins came to the crease to add a quickfire 35.

Burt continued to anchor the innings passing his half-century before he was joined at the crease by Adam Hills. The pair steered Town to maximum battings points before Burt was bowled for a superb 72 (6x4, 1x6). Hills, despite having a woeful start to the season - then decided to open his shoulders and dispatched the toiling Baldock bowlers all over the park on his way to an unbeaten 59 (8x4, 3x6) off just 33 balls and allowed Ramawat to declare on 260/7.

After a relaxing tea, Town knew they would need to work hard for 10 wickets but that the baked pitch was starting to offer some assistance to the bowlers. Shahmeed Syed was a menace to the Baldock top order as he bowled with a consistent off-stump line just short of a length. He ripped through the top order as Baldock crashed to 33/3. A fourth wicket stand of 61 between Blenkin and Cooley briefly threatened to derail Town's plans but Bobby Graham came on to break the partnership and put Town back in the driving seat. Adam Hills bowled with good pace and aggression, starting to look like the bowler of old but it was Syed's return which reinvigorated the innings as he continued to rip through the Baldock side on his was to impressive figures of 33/6 off 13 overs.

Hills and Mekwan picked up a wicket apiece as Town blew away the tail before, somewhat fittingly - Andy Burt rounded off the innings when he swooped from square leg to run out Harris for the final wicket. Town celebrated long into the night. They travel to Harpenden Dolphins next weekend and should be full of confidence. They must look for some consistency now if they want to maintain their promotion challenge.
