Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Ampthill Town on Sat 09 May 2009 at 1.00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 67 runs

Match report NORTHWOOD TOWN lost by 67 runs to Ampthill Town in a game that they were frustrated not to have produced a better overall performance.

Raj Ahluwalia lost the toss for the second time in a row and the hosts were once again asked to field. With Dave Bushnell running late, Ahluwalia opened the bowling himself with Brendan Dwyer but the pair came across a stubborn opening batting pair and failed to make inroads into the Ampthill top order. Skipper Simon Morrall was to be the thorn in Town's side as he was to go on and make a match winning 72 although the hosts rued a couple of missed opportunities. Ahluwalia rotated the bowling but at 157-2 with 16 overs remaining the visitors looked in a very strong position. To the hosts' credit, they produced a tremendous rearguard action and Johannes Van EE returned for his second spell to destroy the Ampthill middle order. Switching to bowling uphill, Van EE returned a remarkable 7-57 and with Brendan Dwyer bowling well at the other end, the hosts managed to dismiss Ampthill for 212.

In reply, Town could not replicate the Ampthill start and lost an early wicket as Ahluwalia was snared. However, Rohan Lee and Brendan Heaney continued their excellent partnership to steady Town. Heaney (24) adapted well to whilst Lee was once again in sublime form and carved out an excellent 70. Unfortunately for Lee and Town, there was little back up and he could only watch as a combination of poor shot selection and frustration saw the middle order collapse. Michael Lister did his best to support Lee with a cautious 15 but there was little more of Town resistance until Dave Bushnell ended with an unbeaten 20 at the end. However, the Ampthill spinners had got on top of the hosts' and they were dismissed for 145.

Ahluwalia was annoyed with certain aspects of the defeat:
"Two things probably cost us today. The first hour we didn't really get going and although we fielded well and saw an excellent bowling performance in the latter stages, we had left ourselves a bit of a mountain to climb. In terms of batting four of us, who are expected to score runs, got ducks today which isnt really good enough and we need to show much better application in future games."
