Luton Town & Indians v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 27 Jun 2009 at 1.00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets

Match report NORTHWOOD TOWN travelled to second placed Luton Town and Indians and nearly pulled off a surprise result despite once again being beset by injury problems. Town's woes continued as Dave Bushnell and Dean Barker were held up by car problems and stand in skipper Rohan Lee was forced to play around with the batting order to try and accommodate the temporary loss.

Johanes Van Ee and Brendan Heaney opened the batting and came up against a strong bowling attack. Van Ee showed intent but was out early on for 15, whilst Heaney battled hard for little reward. Shaun O'Neill was promoted up the order but snared by a brilliant piece of wicket-keeping and it was Lee and Michael Lister who needed to knuckle down to prevent a fatal collapse. The pair grinded out a partnership of 50 before Lister (10) went as momentum was beginning to build. Phil Costard joined Lee and worked the ball patiently but he was also to be dismissed as some quality spinning soon told. Barker helped Lee begin building again but the captain was finally dismissed for 62 trying to lift the tempo. His innings had been critical on a day when Town had struggled to cope with the experienced bowling attack. From here it would be a struggle to reach a competitive score and whilst Veer Vadgama (10 not out) showed encouraging signs on his first eleven debut, Town were dismissed for 136.

Against a team who had lost just once all season Town's hopes looked slim, but Bushnell again showed some terrific form with the ball and gave the hosts something to think about. An early wicket was a good start for the visitors but Luton's overseas player took control of the game with some aggressive play. Nevertheless Town continued to pick up wickets and Vadgama took an excellent caught and bowled effort whilst O'Neill claimed a wicket maiden in his first bowling stint for the first eleven. Costard (2-28) showed adaptability with his spinning and took two wickets whilst Bushnell (3-45) provided his usual consistent performance. However, Luton were able to claim victory with just two wickets remaining.

Lee was disappointed in defeat but also encouraged with some performances::
"Again we didnt get enough runs on the board which is something we have to improve on. However we showed good spirit in the field and the youngsters in particular did well given the circumstances"
