Northwood Town Cricket Club Sunday XI v Alexandra Park on Sun 29 Jun 2014 at 1pm
Match was Tied
Match report
On a cloudy, drizzly day, Northwood Town Sunday XI took on a good quality and gentlemanly Alexandra Park at Chestnut Avenue in their third league game of the season. Having won the toss Town decided to bat first on a decent wicket and freshly cut outfield. Openers Loomba and Patel got off to good start with some attacking strokes before the latter departed only to bring Vadgama to the crease, who along with Loomba put on an excellent partnership of 98 giving Town a solid foundation. Kotecha added a few more before Taz Katira joined Vadgama adding runs in another useful partnership. After both had departed skipper J.B and Ghaffar started the acceleration with some boundaries, the former unfortunate to be run out by a good quality stop, release, throw and hit all in an instant whist backing up too far. Ghaffar carried on though and hit some excellent fours and a six to bring Town up to a very competitive 239 off our 45 overs. After a fine spread at tea with some brownies for my boys thrown in, Town emerged from the pavilion in more pleasant weather but were quickly watching the ball fly to all parts despite an early wicket from Ghaffar. Town dug in and with Daly's bowling tried to slow the rate with a more defensive field and their patience was rewarded when Lawrence dived forward at mid off to take a superb fingertip catch off the bowling of Palan to remove the dangerous Smith. Another great piece of fielding came along, this time Taz Katira bowling the ball in from deep accurately as ever to hit the top of off and run out Park's skipper who been going well. With new batsmen at the crease Loomba and Meeth Katira but the breaks on their progress both bowling tight lines building the pressure back onto Park which resulted in another great pice of fielding as Lawrence picked up and threw in an instant, knocking out the stumps of the stranded batsman and producing another run out. The game which had now swung back Town's way then was almost taken away again as a succession off lusty blows off the bat but stood firm as Lawrence again came up with the goods taking a sharp caught and bowled and then clean bowl one more to leave Town very close to victory. All the time though Park were creeping toward the required total and when the last pair got within sight and were almost removed by a hard return catch not quite sticking you felt the game had gone. But as the scores tied level the young man who had shown so much enthusiasm and quality in the field today stepped up under pressure and delivered the wicket by bowling their number ten to tie the game and with his great commitment in the field and superb bowling to wrestle the game back from defeat and all on such young shoulders the man of the match Aiden Lawrence deserves a lot of credit. That's two points more now than we achieved in the whole of last season so this team continues fight hard and with the needed maturity to be patient whilst building totals with the bat and to dig in whilst waiting to take wickets in the field we are starting to produce some very good cricket. Lets keep this train rolling!
