Redbourn III v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 02 Jun 2018 at 01:00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 69 runs.
Match report
Town’s second XI arrived at the Redbourn Recreation ground on the back of 2 back to back wins. After winning the toss, Town decided to make use of overcast conditions and slightly damp pitch by asking the opposition to bat. Redbourn experienced openers started with a mix of caution and aggression topped with excellent running skills demonstrated by their very senior skipper who got them to a decent start with ball holding and staying low. Malik who was making good use of the pitch, broke the opening stand by trapping the batsmen in front of the wickets when the score was 38 in the 10th over.
It was such a day where bowlers were always in the game, if hitting the good lengths but Redbourn batsmen ensured that any full or short was put away as if it was part of a plan. Change of bowling continued the story by being in the business all the time but anything out of spot was put away by the batsmen. During this process wickets kept tumbling and by 30 overs ,Redbourn were 90 for 6. Ram Patel who was bowling beautifully from one end kept the batsmen guessing and ended with brilliant figures of 5 for 26 in his 10 overs. In the end, Redbourn got all out scoring 177 in 49 overs. The score was 20 to 30 extra for Town’s liking given the conditions and the bowling attack but the feeling was that it was still doable given Towns batting hadn’t fired yet.
Vinodh, injuring his hand while going for a catch, was out of contention and Haji joined Ramawat to open the innings. Town got to a flying start scoring 25 of 5 overs but introduction of spin after 4 overs put the brakes on scoring. Despite knowing the fact that the ball is staying low, Ramawat made a blunder of going on back foot to pull a short ball that never saw sunlight and was caught standing in front of the wickets. From there on Town never had any partnership and wickets kept tumbling to some loose shot selection and due to the nature of pitch. While the wickets were tumbling from one end, Pandey who was playing with a dead straight bat at all times, tried to build partnerships with all the batsmen without any real success. The only partnership after opening stand of 28 came at 7th between Pandey and Shah resulting in 21 runs. At the later stage, again Ram Patel and Pandey showed how to bat but it was too little too late. Town finished their story in 46th over on 108 all out, loosing the game by 69 runs.
We as a team, talk a lot about how the game should be played, what sort of attitude to play, roles, responsibilities and all the other jargons but the fact remains the same that we haven’t been able to bat our full 50 overs and haven’t been able to do basics right when it comes to batting. We all need to really look at ourselves individually and think about our batting efforts and what needs to be worked on before thinking about others and collective as a team. Skipper strongly believes that if we as an individuals can raise our game and sort out our own individual batting issues, we will be a happy bunch. Unless we do that, we batsmen will carry on doing injustice to our brilliant bowling attach that I feel is best in the division that we have seen so far.
Strongly suggest all the batsmen to have a think and come up with a plan and a mind-set to set the scene right, come next game.
Upwards & Onwards.
