Datchworth II v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 18 Jul 2020 at 1:00 pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets.
Match report
Finally the cricket season started and with that Town 2nd XI picked up from where they left last season after being promoted to Div7A. Town started their 2020 campaign against Datchworth 2nd XI and traveled to Datchworth Sports Club and were greeted with a lovely village club surrounded by some beautiful houses. The weather, pitch & fast outfield only meant one thing, win the toss and bat first but unfortunately, town lost the toss and were asked to field first.
New ball was shared by ever improving Malik along with returning P. Patel. Both started well but Datchworth openers were cautious with their approach and along the way played some classic drives. Datchworth were 32 without any loss at the end of the 8 overs. A double bowling change was introduced and Syed along with Anjum were introduced, Syed straight away made an impact and troubled both the openers and soon he was gifted a wicket by Malik who took his best catch in the last 10 years at the club, plucking a ferocious cut out of air at the backward point. After a couple of overs from Anjum, Mapara was introduced and he too found his rhythm & firepower, making it difficult for the Datchworth batsmen out in the middle. Soon Syed was rewarded with another wicket for his excellent line and lengths and Mapara followed with the prize wicket of the skipper who was looking well set and dangerous. At the end of the 22 over Datchworth were 80/3. Datchworth looked to consolidate but kept on losing further wickets as all town bowlers bowled really well on a pitch that was flat and not offering any seam or swing. When it was looking like Datchworth would struggle to make it to 120, their number 8 came and played a cameo of some lovely lofted shots propelling Datchworth score to 146 before they were all bowled out in the 40th over.
After a very strange tea break (without any tea) town openers Gairola & skipper Ramawat took to the middle hoping to make an easy meal of the run chase. Gairola's furniture was cleaned-up on the first delivery of the innings and his facial expression summed-up the delivery. The horror did not stop there, in the same 1s over, skipper Ramawat was also cleaned-up and town scorecard looked gobsmacked! 3 for 2 in 1 over. Walked in M. Patel, playing his 1st game for the 2s in a while, started slaying the opening attack with disdain & town scorecard zoomed to 42/2 at the end of 4 overs. Unfortunately, town lost another wicket in the form of Halai in the next over leaving a nervous dressing room. Pandey joined Patel in the middle and stitched a partnership of valuable 52 before Pandey got out lbw on 16. As it goes, Patel followed in the next over after making a brilliant 50 leaving town scoreline 100/5 in 19 overs. Still needing 48 runs to win, town were cautious but optimistic of a successful chase as Anjum & Janardhan were still out in the middle. Anjum wasted no time and started punishing anything loose and soon it was all but over. Town won the game comprehensively by 5 wickets.
As it has been the case in the past, town's bowling was very impressive, restricting Datchworth to a modest score of below 150 on a ground that was full of runs. Although there were minor wobbles at the top order, town got home in the end comfortably with 5 wickets in hand. Great effort in the bowling by Malik, Syed and Mapara and equally sparkling effort with the bat by Patel.
