Hatfield & Crusaders v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 12 Sep 2020 at 11:00am
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 63 runs

Match report Town arrived at the scenic ground of Hatfield & Crusaders with a simple equation. Win the match, win the league. Town won the toss and elected to bat first in an attempt to try and bat Hatfield out of the game.

With the wicket a lot slower than we thought it would be, Town were on the back foot immediately as a well disguised off cutter from Bigley found the gap between bat and pad of Loomba. Enter Sohan Modi and together with partner Veer Vadgama looked to rebuild. Easily the two most in form batsmen in the 1st team this year, they knew a lot of pressure was on their shoulders to build a partnership. With patience and a touch of class, they rotated well, defended their wickets and put away the rare loose deliveries in what was a disciplined bowling attack from Crusaders. As both Modi and Vadgama passed their 50s, they were getting Town into a very good position. At the 30 over mark, with 15 to play, Town were 122/1 - wickets in hand but needing to up the ante to get to a competitive total. With Vadgama on the verge of scoring his first century for the club, his want for team glory exceeded his want for personal glory as he lost his wicket looking to take the attack to Hatfield in the 40th over and departed with town on 198/2 after a classy knock. Modi continued the charge to get Town to a total of 220+ which on this wicket was an excellent score and continued to play shots all over the ground. Modi reached his second century of the season and has proved an invaluable player to the club in his second year. Town reached a score of 230 off 45.

In defence of this total, Town started well with Daly bowling his consistent lines and lengths - a season where he has probably bowled the best he ever has done but hasnt got as many wickets as he has deserved. He bowled a fabulous opening spell of 9 over, 1 wicket for just 15 runs and along with Lawrence who bowled with really good pace, put Crusaders on the back foot straight away with the run rate now very tough to achieve. K Patel and Shah continued the good work picking up a wicket each and with the run rate at 10 an over, some big hits from Golder were in vain as the third bowling partnership of M Patel and Vadgama rattled through the middle order as it became mathematically impossible for Town to lose. A last over cameo which almost saw a wicket from Burt sealed the deal and Town were crowned champions of Hertfordshire Division 4a.

Celebrations continued long into the night but the season was one that would be remembered for many years to come. Champione, Champione, Ole, Ole, Ole was ringing in the ears of the players even on the Sunday morning.

Up the Town.
