Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Watford Town II on Sat 06 Aug 2022 at 12pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 30 runs
Match report
Town Welcomed Watford Town II (WT II) in a must win game to keep their promotion chances alive. Winning the toss Town chose to bat first.
And just like every week opening pair of Madhavan and Aggarwal went about their business in an aggressive fashion. WT II bowlers struggled as runs started to fly. Aggarwal was brutal against anything pitched short or full. While Madhavan was also in form and played some lovely shots highlight being some wristy flicks on leg side. Aggarwal passed another 50 in no time and score raced to 139 in just 22 overs. However, Nishchay failed short of another 50 as he got stumped. Soon after Aggarwal also departed for 93 leaving Town on 149/2 after 25 overs. No words will do justice to describe form Aggarwal is in and this inning deserved what would have been his third ton of the season. Loomba also departed for his favourite food quack…quack…quack DUCK! And suddenly Town collapse was on the card. However, Modi who has been in great form was batting with groin injury was determined to make sure that did not happen and he was well supported by Anjum batting at 5. Together they put on partnership of 87 runs in just 15.3 overs. Modi passed his third 50 of the season. He pushed through the pain barrier and built a great platform for Town’s lower order. Anjum should be given lot of credit for his calculated inning taking it deep. Town lost Modi after a fine inning of 78 trying to up the run rate followed by Anjum and Gairola. Verma asked Town skipper to promote himself up the order which paid dividend with skipper smashing 24* in just 9 deliveries supported by Burt at the other end. Town finished their inning with a big score of 310.
Town seamers Daly and Verma started very well both picking up 2 wickets each leaving WT II 63/4 after 12 overs. It was not an easy wicket to bowl on with rapid outfield but Town did well to keep the pressure on. That became 94/6 after spin duos of Madhavan and skipper both got a wicket each. At this stage town were on top with great fielding performance which included brilliant slip catching by Loomba (taking 2 catches) and Burty (Sharpe catch at gully). However, Syed and Guffron patiently started building partnership as Town got little complacent. Suddenly poor fielding letting balls go through for fours as well as easy dropped catches meant there was a way back for WT II chasing the big target. Having claimed not to have a dropped any catches in 3 years Loomba dropped 3 in the game alone. WT II put on partnership of 140 runs for the 7th wicket which was eventually broken by Anjum. Daly and Verma bowled great death over spell to get Town over the line as WT II finished on 281/8 after 50 overs. Although picking up only 1 wicket Madhavan was pick of the bowlers conceding just 31 runs of his 10 over spell. Town won the game by 30 runs.
Skipper Patel spoke after the game: It was a very satisfying win. Aggarwal, Modi and Madhavn continued their fine form with the bat and we kept fighting in the field when going got tough. We have 4 must win games remaining and hope other results go our way but we will keep going all the way till end.
