Match report In the Penultimate game of the season, in a time when Town needed to continue their win streak and their good momentum, Town faced possibly the best opponent in the league, Lutonian II’s. Lutonian II’s arrived on a sunny day to a great deck prepared by John, slightly damp from the rain the previous day. After winning the toss, Town decided to put Lutonian’s to bat first, opting to try to chase instead of defending a total. Opening the bowling this week was the combination of Hiren and Sajid, both who bowled very well in their opening spell, giving very little away. With another brilliant piece of fielding, Town were able to send away the opposition’s main batsmen for just 3 runs. A poor full toss onto the leg stump from Sajid was flicked away to the other side of the square leg umpire. Cijine dove to his right across the umpire and took a stunning catch to dismiss the most dangerous batsman from Lutonian’s. A couple of overs later, Hiren made another breakthrough, bowling #3 for just 7 runs. After Krunal Puwar came into the attack early to take advantage of the damp pitch, confusion between batsmen ended up with one batsman running straight into the other, knocking one of the batters to the ground and resulting in an easy run out for Krunal Puwar. Town’s pressure in the field, their voice and their tight bowling meant that they were not taking the wickets, Lutonian’s were gifting the wickets to Town. Krunal Puwar continued to use the damp pitch and worked through the batsmen, bowling two batsmen and getting another trapped with an LBW. Two wickets from Iqbal and an LBW from Mairaj allowed Town to bowl Lutonian’s out for 134 runs in 34.5 overs.

After a quick tea break and a rousing speech from Amish, Town’s openers walked out to start the chase. Deepak and Ravi both started positively, albeit slowly due to Lutonian’s tight bowling and this warranted in the first breakthrough, with Ravi being dismissed. In came Amish, who stayed with Deepak and built a 45-run partnership and carried Town to a decent position. An LBW to Deepak, ended the partnership and brought in Iqbal, who as always, scored well. Amish was soon dismissed after Deepak and Bijendra was soon batting with Iqbal, looking to close the run chase. What followed was a silly loss of wickets and unnecessary awarding of points to Lutonian’s as Town’s batsmen dismissed themselves, with Iqbal, Bijendra and Keeran all losing their wickets in a very cheap way. However, Town’s batting depth saw them through as Cijine and the Skipper closed the chase, bringing Town their 6th win of the season. A well-deserved victory brought Tow all the way to ware, the final game they needed to win to secure safety and pull off the great escape.
