Northwood V v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 14 May 2022 at 1.00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
The mighty 4s took on their neighbours this weekend at Northwood's home ground in Great Missenden. On a beautiful day and greenish wicket, 4s lost the toss and the opposition decided to unexpectedly bat first.
4s began their innings with the fearsome opening strike attack of Lourdes and Maaz. Both bowled superbly and giving almost nothing away. They both bowled with precision and skill, Lourdes pace beating both batsmen at regular intervals whilst Maaz with his wily outswingers forcing the "play and miss" shot. At the drinks break Northwood were at a frustrating 66 for 1 and struggling to increase the run rate beyond 3 runs per over. Dhaval picking up the first wicket with a plumb LBW decision. After drinks the Northwood innings began to implode. With magical offspin of Dhiren at one end and the tireless metronomical medium cutters from Dhaval at the other end the opposition failed to make any decent headway with their score. Despite a few lucky edges the mighty 4s continued to apply the pressure on the Northwood batsmen. Dhaval and Dhiren picking up 2 well deserved wickets apiece supported by an acrobatic flying catch from Jaineel. An earlier LBW decision which had gone in 4s favour was reversed by wicket keeper/skipper Lal to maintain the spirit and gentlemanly conduct of the game (the ball had touched the bat before striking the pads). This gesture was warmly appreciated by Northwood and the entire game continued to be played in highly competitive but friendly atmosphere. At 25 overs Northwood looked as if they may push beyond the 150 mark, however Lourdes was re-introduced into the attack and took a wonderful wicket uprooting the middle stump and dismissing their no5 batsmen. At the other end the mystical spin of JB was introduced to lure the batsmen into his web of confusion and frenzy. The maelstrom that followed is something this commentator has not witnessed for many seasons. JB's first wicket fell to a lovely stumping bewildering the batsmen to play too far forward. The second wicket was a masterpiece of fielding, Jaspal at short third man "exoceting" the ball back to keeper Lal who with Dhoni...esque precision removed the bails leaving the batsman just several inches short. JB's 3rd wicket fell to a superb catch by newcomer Bijendra at mid-wicket and the final wicket fell to another stumping, the batsmen reaching out to the adjacent strip only to find his bails smartly flicked off. Northwood ended their innings on 144 with yet another superb bowling and fielding display by the mighty 4s.
After a brief homemade tea, the mighty 4s began the run chase. Despite the loss of an early wicket, Inshal and Bijendra played what can only be described as a "Haynes and Greenidge" innings, power shots coupled with elegance and timing. Both confounded the opposition and despite regular fielding changes they both found the gaps and peppered the boundary frequently. Bijendra knocked-up his first 50 of the season so massive respect and applause for laying the foundation of the innings. Inshal scored a supportive 16 taking the score to 75 for 2 at drinks. After drinks, the 4s lost 3 quick wickets to what can only be described as the re-incarnation of Jonty Rhodes who took 3 amazing catches at square leg. However skipper Lal along with Praxy raised the drawbridge and began the run chase. Praxy skilfully rotated the strike allowing Lal to keep on top of the run rate and smash any loose balls to the boundary. The run chase ended in the 37th over with Lal unbeaten on 32, Praxy scoring 8 but batting for 6 overs to keep the momentum firmly with the mighty 4s.
Well what can I say, yet another professionally executed and spirited performance. Our cricket is our Word....let's keep shouting it out every Saturday afternoon chaps.....onwards.
