Northwood Town Cricket Club Midweek v Barbarians CC on Wed 22 Jun 2022 at 5.45pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost
Match report
On another sunny evening, Town hosted Barbarians CC looking to avenge last week's midweek loss. Loosing the toss, Town bowled first on what could be described as a very tricky wicket to bat on. Town's bowling effort started in the perfect way as Viral Patel tasked with the very difficult job of bowling all of his overs in the first six excelled with figures of 3-16. In the middle overs, Karan Verma was the chief destroyer as he bowled aggressively and returned with excellent figures of 3-11. At any point in the innings, Barbarians CC struggled to put too many partnerships together, all credit going to the disciplined bowling effort from all the bowlers. Town on the whole barring a few discrepancies in the field and with ball in hand, bowled very well and restricted Barbarians CC to 113-7 after the allotted 20 overs.
In the batting department, Town began steadily with Nisch Madhavan and Kunal Patel putting together a 30 odd run partnership, before Kunal was caught brilliantly in the cover region. The Town innings however, never recovered after this setback, as there was a constant stream of wickets and a lack of concrete partnerships. However, seemingly after all hope was lost, Sajid Malik along with Viral Patel, put brought the required down from 9 to 7 with some excellent running between the wickets and lusty blows. However the partnership ended, when a slight misjudgement from the two batsmen resulting in Sajid Malik getting run out. Once again a seemingly lost game, came back into grasp, as Jack Daly once again along with Viral Patel, scored briskly, taking every run on offer and calmly putting the bad balls away. With 5 runs required of 4 balls, another moment of misjudgement saw Town loose its last wicket in the form of Viral Patel and eventually loose by a small margin of 4 runs.
Speaking after the game Town captain Madhavan remarked: Tough loss for us today, it ebbed and flowed, but we failed to take control in the key moments. I felt we conceded 10 runs too many after a great start and middle phase of the innings, but it was a much improved fielding and bowling performance to our last outing. With bat in hand, I genuinely felt the pitch detoriated significantly as the match went on and there was a tough mix of uneven bounce and unpredictability. Saying that, I felt we needed to put a couple of partnerships together and I needed to anchor the innings till the end instead of trying to be AB De Villiers and sweep a fast bowler. Very pleased with our lower order though, who kept bringing us back from loosing positions. In the end, happy as always with the boy's efforts and hopefully we'll return next week with a positive result.
