Ware v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 20 May 2023 at 13:00
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 68 runs
Match report
Having had their first two league games cancelled this season due to weather, Northwood Town's 2's were eager to officially kickstart their season off and this began with an away league fixture at Ware CC, a hefty hour and 15 minute drive to the grounds. When arriving, Town turned up to an absolute beauty of a pitch, rock hard and flat with a great outfield as always at Ware CC, definitely a pitch with runs in it. A quick training warm up session was conducted and Town's skipper headed with the opposition skipper to toss up, winning the toss and electing to bowl first.
After avoiding the groundskeepers two black labs and getting changed, Town headed on pitch to kick off the game with Pratik Patel and Skipper Sajid spearheading the bowling attack. Both Sajid and Pratik bowled well with good, tight lines and great pace, forcing the Ware openers to be defensive and this worked well in Town's favour, building pressure till the 5th over when Ware lost their first opener, courtesy of Pratik Patel. Pratik and Saj continued to bowl well together, keeping easy runs hard to find and limiting the opposition to 34 - 1 after 9 overs with 2 maidens from Pratik in his opening spell. Hiren came into the attack as the first change bowler, pairing with Cijine to replace the opening bowling partnership and Hiren started off really well, bowling his great lengths and getting the ball to move and seam off. His tight bowling and a lack of runs forced the batsmen to take a risk and that led to Hiren crashing into the wickets, bringing Town's second wicket. Cijine on the other end start off well, conceding just 14 in his first 4 overs and together, Hiren and Cijine ended their spell of 9 overs for just 30 runs, 1 wicket and a maiden over. Looking to be more attacking and taking wickets, in came in Krunal Puwar, bowling his spin and trying to cause some issues for the Ware batsmen. Unfortunately, Ware's batsmen played well, waiting patiently for anything slightly under or over pitched and dispatching it efficiently for a boundary, not letting Krunal settle and find his rhythm. Neel Kalhan came to support Krunal and to try effect a change in batting personnel on pitch but being unable to settle, Neel was unfortunately punished by the well set batsmen who were patient and technical, waiting for any bad lengths and running hard on any good deliveries. The buildup of runs and a solid partnership between the Ware batsmen forced Town to change strategy to try and end this partnership so Amit Chhlani was introduced to the crease, bowling his medium pace and looking to upset the Ware batsmen. After starting positively and keeping the Ware batsmen quiet for the first couple of overs, the batsmen soon adjusted and started to pick up Amit's lengths, scoring a quick 21 from his four overs and starting to pick up the run rate. Returning to slow things down and maybe take a wicket or two were the openers Saj and Pratik, who came back and bowled another 7 over spell with 2 wickets being taken. However, this introduced a finisher from Ware who picked up the pitch's conditions immediatley, scoring a quick 60 and propelling his teams score. The final bowling partnership of Hiren and Cijine ended with another couple of wickets but also a few more boundaries and Ware CC ended their innings with a very healthy 217 for 7 after 40 overs. After keeping the opposition to 82 - 2 in 20 overs, Town really felt they should have limited their opposition to below 200 on this pitch.
A short 20 minute tea break and Town headed out to chase the 218 target with Ravi Ramawat and Bijendra Vaghela leading the chase of the 218 target. Town started off slowly but patiently as the new ball was moving. Ravi playing patiently as always held one end down as Bijendra looked to play the aggressor and throw Ware's bowlers off their line. Running well and putting any loose deliveries away, Town carried on to 17 run off 7 overs when Town lost their first wicket with Ravi being bowled out by their opener. Replacing Ravi at number 3 was Harry and having seen a few deliveries was bowled by a low full toss. The loss of two quick wickets meant that Town were 36 - 2 with Cijine supporting Bijendra. Both played well before Bijendra soon was bowled by a good delivery, continuing the trend of consitently falling wickets. The dismissal of Bijendra introduced Keeran to the crease, who batted with Cijine and together stayed together, batting for a long time and building a slow partnership together. Cijine started to really accelerate and pick up the run-rate and with Keeran, both played a great partnership but this soon ended when Keeran was dismissed, a slow innings from him. Krunal Puwar went in to replace Keeran and with Cijine, both ran well, pushing the opposition fielders and putting pressure back onto the fielders till Krunal Puwar was caught trying to accelerate. Cijine was partnered with Neel who went in and just started running singles. Cijine soon fell, caught and Town's batting soon collapsed with Pratik and Sajid trying to carry the chase on but with limited success. The consistent wickets falling for Town ultimately led to their downfall with Town bowled out for 150 and falling quite short of the 218 target set by Ware.
A good effort by Town but some loose bowling and some unsteady batting partnerships ultimately led to our downfall. Plenty of positives here though, some good bowling from Pratik, Sajid and Hiren and a great allround performance from Cijine as a well as a great knock from Bijendra so despite the tough loss, plenty of positives for Town to reflect and work on.
Onto the next game Town!
