Cockfosters v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 01 Jun 2024 at 12:00 PM
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won By 5 wickets

Match report On an overcast and chilly morning, Town travelled to Cockfosters CC for our 4th league game. With the stakes high and Cockfosters being ahead of town on the table, town won the toss and skipper Madhavan opted to bowl first, on what looked like a pretty damp and tricky surface, that oddly was very similar to our very own home ground. Starting off with the new ball were a pair of veteran Sajid Malik and youngster Rudra Shah. In what can be described as amazing partnership bowling, Malik kept things very quiet, often troubling both openers, whilst Shah broke through with some fiery and accurate bowling, he can also be considered unlucky, as he had a chance go down and some edges landing in no man zones. Ibbad Kayani and Iqbal Anjum then came on, and once again bowled extremely well in tandem. Kayani broke through twice with some quick bowling, including a terrific caught and bowled, whilst Anjum broke through 3 times, baffling and confusing the opposition batsmen whilst being unplayable as usual. Then Town veteran Krunal Patel, came on, getting one wicket and being miserly as usual, partnering with him was returning 1s player Jesant Halai, who bowled beautifully and with great control, also picking up a wicket. Then Town skipper Madhavan bought himself on, picking up a wicket and keeping things quiet. Overall every single town bowler beautifully and to plan, restricting the opposition whilst picking up regular wickets. It was easily one of Towns best bowling efforts of the season and an effort to be proud off.

In response, town openers Nischay Madhavan and Rahul Aggarwal begun well, negotiating the tricky surface whilst getting a few boundaries and runs away. Shortly after a small partnership though, Aggarwal fell to an in swinger, trapping him LBW. Then it was the turn of newcomer Humayun Wassim and Madhavan to continue the job and they did just that putting on a crucial 78 run partnership in very difficult conditions. The partnership however wasn't without its challenges, as the opposition bowlers bowled beautifully according the the surface. A bowling partnership between two of their spinners, severely restricted both Wassim as well as Madhavan, who trickled along, but managed to see of the danger bowlers without much damage done. Eventually however, Wassim got out bowled round his legs, after being told by Madhavan the previous ball to ride out the last ball left in the over, bowled by their danger spinner. Wassim's innings ended on 29, which was a crucial contribution to the teams cause. Soon after Madhavan feeling bolstered by reaching his fifty and pulling their quickest bowler into the bush, got out trying to drive one away, eventually holing out to the cover fielder. In typical Town fashion, there was drama to follow as Iqbal Anjum and Mikhil Patel both got out, with 18 runs to win. Riding out the initial pressure from the opposition, Jesant Halai and Andy Burt weathered the storm wonderfully and bought town home with just 3 overs remaining. It was a very tense finish and went right down the bottom, but some experienced and level headed batting from Burt and Halai ensured town returned home with 30 points and the opposition just 6 points.

After the game Town skipper Madhavan spoke: Fantastic win, super crucial as Cockfosters were above on the table and are a dangerous opposition with a very competent bowling attack. Bowlers set the game up really, bowling superbly well to a plan and sticking very well to their lines and lengths. Then the batters took us home professionally, although the chase was not straightforward at all and proved tricky. Very impressed by their two spinners in particular, who restricted us severely through the middle of the innings, but we did very well to not throw our wickets away and ride out the danger. Pleased by the result and pleased by the efforts made by each and every one of our boys, a gritty and character filled win. Hopefully we can take this momentum forward and get a good run of wins going forward.
