Watford Town III v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 18 May 2024 at 01:00 p.m.
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 81 runs
Match report
NTCC 2’s travelled to Watford Town 3’s on an overcast afternoon in Hertfordshire. Captain Ravi Ramawat lost the toss and was expectedly put into bat, however it may not have been the worst toss to lose given it was a chance to bat on a fresh well-prepared strip.
Openers Deepak Gairola and Bijendra ‘lucky’ Vaghela started cautiously, particularly against mystery bowler Rajpurkar who bowled with great accuracy and changes of pace, eventually bowling his 7 overs for just 14 runs. However, both openers were determined to make a solid start to the batting innings with Gairola carving up some particularly glorious offside back foot cut shots. He eventually fell for a crucial 43 off just 48 deliveries in the 20th over, just after the pair had managed to a put up a 100-run partnership. Vaghela went soon after for a gritty 34, with captain Ramawat and promising youngster Jay Patel also falling in quick succession in an attempt to up the rate even further. After hacking across the line and getting a duck, youngster Jay’s day was about to get a lot worse, with an irate father Patel waiting at the bylines to give his son an old-school Gujarati tongue lashing.
Another promising young batsman in Keeran Sudagaran was able to battle through to make 23 before being run-out again trying to up the scoring rate. At 157-5 with 8 overs remaining and after his five-fer last week, in stepped all-rounder Cijine John (27*) and keeper Tushar Shah (23) who both batted excellently picking up a number of 2’s and 3’s and rotating strike well. In the end, Town finished on 207-6 off the 40 overs which seemed an above par score, largely thanks to the opening partnership as well as the finish in the last 10 overs.
A confident yet cautious Town went into the 2nd innings knowing it wouldn’t be easy against a solid Watford Town who had posted a decent total the week before. Canny operator Meet Agrawal opened proceedings with the ball and managed to get a wicket off his 3rd ball with a beautiful outswinging delivery, caught at 1st slip by Krunal Puwar. He was joined by youngster Jay who after needing an over to warm up, managed to grab a further 2 quick wickets (with the 2nd a particularly thunderous LBW) in quick succession leaving Watford Town 19-3. It was an excellent start fort NTCC, but Watford Town managed to dig-in and form a small partnership passing the 50 mark and reaching 64-3.
Replacing the opening bowlers were Keval Shah and Krunal Puwar. Shah bowled with pace and accuracy and was able to take a wicket in his 2nd over with Puwar doing the same. Puwar bowled excellently using a slightly worn 2nd innings pitch, with one particular delivery landing on off and hitting leg stump. After learning from his mistake last week, Shah knew that if he didn’t bowl his full quota in one go, the quality of the bowling attack would finish the job off before he had a chance to return for a 2nd spell. Him and Puwar rattled through the middle and lower order finishing with 3 wickets a-piece, with Shah taking all 4 of his wickets across the first 2 games clean bowled. After starring in the first innings with the tongue lashing he gave his son, Viral Patel finished the job off in his first over as NTCC bowled out Watford Town for a 121 in the 26th over.
Captain Ramawat spoke after the game. ‘The theme of the day was partnerships, with Deepak and Bijendra at the start and Cijine and Tushar at the end of the batting innings, followed by Meet and Jay with the opening ball and Keval and Krunal in the middle phase. It was a convincing win by an ever-growing confident bunch and we hope it can continue next week and beyond.’
