Ley Hill v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 22 Jun 2024 at 01:00 p.m.
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report Town II XI travelled to Chiltern Hills to face the table topper Ley Hill, who were the Mid Bucks & Chiltern Championship winners now joining the Herts League Div 7.

The weather stayed pristine and spotless throughout the week but decided to get dark, dirty, and muddy on Saturday morning (well, no surprises there, ha). Town lost the toss and were inserted to bat in tricky conditions.

Town openers Aggarwal & Gairola started the innings with aggression, but Gairola, after being dropped twice, couldn't contain his enthusiasm and got out pushing his luck too much. Rahul, who looked like a 'man on a mission' was harshly punishing anything off the line, got run out unfortunately, leaving a big dent on Town's plans. The Town scorecard read 23/2 in 8 overs. Ley Hill showcased their class with the variety of bowling that they had, making scoring ever so difficult in conditions that were helpful to the bowlers. Town batsmen tried hard to build partnerships and mix aggression when opportunities were provided, but Town kept on losing wickets at regular intervals due to high-quality bowling and exemplary fielding standards showcased by Ley Hill. Town finished their innings 144/10 in 35 overs, not even playing their full allocated 40 overs.

Town were again unfortunate as the other Agarwal, Meet, pulled his back before the game and was ruled out of the game, leaving Town to do the job with 10 men. By this time, the sun was out nicely and after a nice team 'Paratha' tea, Town took to the field with 10 brave men to defend their total.

Ley Hill openers Khan and Peterson showcased their class, playing with precision. Loose deliveries were dispatched to the boundary while good balls were respected. Town tried everything to break the partnership, but the openers glided through all the challenges, taking Ley Hill to 112 without loss in 22 overs. Just when the chase seemed wrapped up, John took a brilliant catch at cow corner boundary to dismiss Peterson, giving Town their first breakthrough. Typical of chases with only a few runs remaining, Hill lost a few more wickets but comfortably reached their target of 145.

It was a tough game for obvious reasons. Playing a team that is a 'Championship Winner' is a lifetime event for 'Div 7' players, so we take pride in the fight that was put together as a team. Clearly, Hill outplayed Town in all departments, but we played as a unit and gave everything that we had. Lots of positives to take and a few lessons to be learned for individuals. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of playing a Championship winning team and now we move on!
