Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Broxbourne CC 2nd XI on Sat 06 Sep 2025 at 12:00
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
Well… if cricket was a movie, this one would’ve been a tragicomedy, featuring a heartfelt farewell, a faint hope of promotion, and a spectacular collapse that ended both dreams with remarkable efficiency.
The Context:
Northwood Town 1st XI came into this must-win game needing a victory to keep their promotion hopes alive. The squad was charged up, morale was high, and there was added emotion in the air as the match marked the final appearance of club stalwart Akshay Loomba, who is retiring from cricket to welcome a new family member. We were ready for the fairytale ending...
But instead, we got an absolute plot twist no one asked for.
Northwood Town Innings: 143 all out (45.4 overs)
Things started reasonably okay — Akshay Loomba, playing his swansong, opened the batting and looked determined to write his own happy ending. He crafted a gritty 18 off 46, including two boundaries that had the crowd briefly dreaming of destiny.
Sadly, the rest of the batting line-up decided to honour Akshay’s retirement by taking the afternoon off themselves. Wickets fell like dodgy kebabs at 2am — quick, messy, and with lasting consequences.
Deepak Gairola (18), Rohit Bahl (12), and James Han (10) all got starts before politely handing their wickets over. Only Iqbal Anjum (36)* seemed to realise it was a cricket match and not a charity raffle. He stood tall while others rotated through like a revolving door.
Extras (19) once again proved to be our most reliable middle-order batsman.
Broxbourne’s bowlers bowled tightly, fielded sharply, and generally behaved like people who didn’t want Northwood to have nice things. Special mentions to Tom Hayden (2/19) and Jack Tumbridge (2/18) for making sure any flicker of hope was promptly extinguished.
Broxbourne Reply: 146/3 (32.5 overs)
Defending 143 was always going to be tough. Defending it with bowling that ranged from “not bad” to “please make it stop” made it a downright fantasy.
Broxbourne made light work of the chase. Ollie Symms smacked a classy 64 off 72 balls, which included 10 boundaries and at least three sighs from the captain. Kegan Eales added a patient 32, and by the time Northwood took a third wicket, the game was slipping faster than a fielder on a wet outfield.
Northwood’s bowlers gave it a go, but aside from Rohit Bahl (1/12) and Nischay Madhavan (1/17), the figures were more painful than the team group chat on Monday morning. One bowler, who shall remain nameless (cough Krunal cough), may want to avoid looking at the scoreboard ever again.
Farewell, Akshay Loomba
A huge shoutout to Akshay, who finishes his Northwood career with class, commitment, and two crisply struck boundaries in his final knock. While the fairytale ending wasn’t to be, his contribution to the club has been nothing short of legendary. We wish him all the best as he trades cricket whites for baby wipes!
Final Thoughts
So, the promotion push is over. The season-long dream of going up in glory has officially gone down in flames. But hey, we still have beer, memories, and the group chat — which will no doubt include several GIFs of people falling over and possibly a petition to ban Krunal from bowling.
Onwards to the next game, where we play for pride, banter, and maybe... just maybe... a win.
Oh wait the season is over and we've kind of bottled it after a great start to the season. But as we always say we will be back at it again next year (without Loomba)!
