Old Haberdashers v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 26 Jun 2021 at 12pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets
Match report
After the unfortunate circumstance last week leading to our rivals Old Finch gaining a lead on us in the table, NTCC arrived early at the ground hungry for a win and even managed a very successful pre match training session where the skippers threat of severe punishment encouraged all players to hold on to their catches!
Town lost the toss and were put into bat, as always, another brilliant foundation set by both Loomba and Vadgama putting on just over 80 in c. 16 overs before the skipper was dismissed LBW. Runs were ticking along nicely with NTCC looking to build on the excellent foundations with Vadgama continuing to score runs freely. As runs kept ticking, so did the wickets column and before you knew it the mass total looked far stretched with Town finding themselves in a spot of trouble at 137 for 6 after a flurry of quick wickets. The fears of the inevitable collapse crept in everyone’s mind.
Unalkat feeling the pressure, both for personal and team runs smoothly navigated Town out of a tricky situation building a brilliant partnership with Madhavan. Unalkat’s chanceless innings started off maturely, rotating the 1s and 2s before putting pressure onto the Haberdasher spinners with a couple of big sixes. These two played with precision and executed the basics of cricket excellently; loud clear calling, excellent running between the wickets putting pressure on the fielders after punishing the bad balls - a partnership where the opposition too applauded. Setting themselves frequent but small targets, Town closed in on 200 before Unalkat was dismissed for an invaluable contribution of 39 with c. 9 overs to go. Mandhaven’s clean slog sweet was caught on the boundary which led to Town finishing on 219 all out – a total giving us a fighting chance!
The boys are still trying to work out what Town had in the innings break but it seemed to lead to an influx of wides – many of which ended up reaching the boundary. Not capitalising on an early chance given by Old Habs openers, they played maturely and more importantly kept wickets in hand with Town struggling to make a breakthrough until the 15th over. Runs leaked but the boys kept up hope knowing that a few tight overs and a couple of wickets can change the game. On comes Viral Patel who brought some magic with 2 wickets in 2 balls giving Town a fighting chance. The frustration for any skipper seeing a number of left handers walk in caused some level of frustration and challenge, however unfortunately Old Habs maturely rebuilt after every wicket slowly increasing the pressure on NTCC who were looking at their first defeat of the season. Despite tight spells from Vadgama and Madhavan who both bowled their full allocations conceding only 47 runs in 20 overs – it was not enough as Old Habs reached their target with an over to spare.
Winning becomes contagious and it has become a norm for the 1s over the last 18 months and therefore this defeat is painful to say the least. NTCC were not beat, they lost the game themselves. 60 extras in total speaks volumes. A lot of work to do for the boys. However, the greatest glory lies not in never falling but rising every time we fall. A much-needed lesson which hopefully motivates the boys to work harder and work on the areas needed to prove that we are worthy champions with the best squad in the division! We march on.
