Match report Town travelled to Hitchin II this week looking to get their season back on track with a first win of the season. It was a glorious hot day with a good-looking pitch and a quick outfield! Winning the toss and batting first was a sensible choice but Town lost the toss and were asked to field first.

Hitchin II started very cautiously with Maylin and Bell adding 62 for the first wicket! However, with good discipline from J Daly and Kieron P run rate was below 4 which was looking good for Town on a batting pitch! Introduction of Vadgma as usual brought wickets and Hitchin II were 88/4. Krunal P kept things tight at the other end and was replaced by I Anjum who was even more economical (6-1-11-1). Vadgama finished his wonderful spell with 26/3 in his 10 overs. However, fight back from Flint and Whittle saw Hitchin II post a decent total of 197! Same total Town were asked to chase last week.

Opening the batting was captain Loomba who was off his parental duty for this week. Hitchin bowlers started with immaculate line and length! Loomba and Vadgama struggled to get going. And just like last week it felt like the pitch turned good for bowling suddenly (well Town batter made it look that way anyway). With barely anything on the board Town were 31/3 losing both openers and N Madhavan early. Back against the wall and looked like 55 runs Town scored last week was more of a target than 197! However if you know Town well you know not to write them off easily. I Anjum and A Burt put on a masterclass of how to build an inning. Determination, grit, rotation with good running and picking out the bad ball were the highlights of their partnership. Slowly they started re-building. Both played shots all around the ground taking advantage of loose deliveries and finding gaps. It wasn’t easy with hot weather but both wanted to see their team home. And in no time they put on a partnership of 126 runs and Town were back in the game. But there was going to be another twist with 42 required of last 7 overs A Burt departed after well played 53 and it was down to Town’s lower batting order to see them home. K Patel fell early straight after trying to hit out leaving Town on 158/5. M Patel went to the crease and played his usual aggressive inning which included a beaut of a cover drive and 1 no look six over square leg and another no look 4 over keepers head! He raced to 20 off just 9 delivering and putting Town firmly in control. But Town never make things easy for them after an amazing knock of 70 I Anjum and M Patel got out in quick succession leaving them on 183/7 which became 187/8 when T Shah got out. It was A Unalkat and J Daly who needed to get 11 runs from last 3 overs. And both kept their cool and saw town home in the last over winning by 2 wickets. Words can’t describe that batting display from I Anjum and A Burt which you can see on Hitchin’s YouTube channel!

Captain K Patel spoke after the game: “It was a good bowling performance. Quite often we’re overly reliant on our top order to score runs but when the going got tough it was so pleasing to see I Anjum and A Burt build a wonderful partnership in the middle order! We always have the fire power in lower order to get some quick runs towards the end so well earned victory for the boys!!!”

Town are on the road again next week away to Tewin looking to keep the momentum!
