Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Tewin on Sat 23 Jul 2022 at 12pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 31 runs
Match report
Tewin won the toss and chose to bat first. It was a very hot afternoon and wicket also proved to be nice to bat on. Tewin batters started well, and runs were easy to come by as Town seamers struggles to build any pressure. Skipper brought on spinners early and was rewarded straight away as I Anjum picked up a wicket with his first ball. At that point, any hope of Town picking up any more wickets were wiped out as Lipschitz and Wilde built a very long partnership. That was mainly down to Town fielding very poorly. Easy runs were let through which led to Tewin scoring at almost 6 an over. At 177/1 in just 35 over Tewin looked on course to score 275+. However, there was a fight back from the Town dismissing Lipschitz for 101 (direct hit run out by Kieron P however he did complete 50m breaststroke in the process). R Aggarwal also dismissed Wilde on 98 with another direct hit runout. Kieron P also bowled a great death over spell for 18/3 in just 5 overs. While Town’s top wicket taker also took 2 wickets as Tewin ended their inning on 259/9 in 50 overs.
Having chased 240 last week Town were confident of chasing down the total. Town found themselves 21/5 and looked like the game was going to finish well ahead of the social pizza night. However, D Gairole once again showed how quicky he has settled in his role at 6 as he started putting pressure back on Tewin bowlers. He was supported well by Burt and together out on 49 runs partnership. But just when things were looking good again Gairola departed after a fine inning of 48 followed by quick wickets of Burt and Kieron p. This left Town on 88/8 and in danger of not making it to three figures for the third time this year. Usually, we say on paper all XI can bat. And for once that proved the case. First, a fine 73 runs partnership between J Halai and J Daly gave Town some hope although requited run-rate was around 9 an over. This partnership included some great running between the wicket, some glorious textbook drives from J Halai and a great determination from Daly to take the game deep. J Halai departed after scoring chanceless 38. With 161/9 Tewin thought finally they can close the game off however, skipper K Patel had other ideas. He started smashing every ball he faced to the boundary and all Town players on the boundary started to believe. It did not matter where Tewin bowlers pitched the ball it was disappearing to all parts of the ground. Together in just 6.2 overs Skipper and J Daly put on 67 runs. Skipper K Patel racing to 55* in just 25 balls which included 6 sixes and 6 fours. Town needed only 32 from last 6 overs but were unable to get over the line as J Daly departed after scoring 29. Town were eventually getting all out for 228 losing by 31 runs.
Skipper spoke after the game: We lost the game not with the ball or bat but with fielding. We should have restricted them to 230 max. However, it was very pleasing to lower middle order show great character to fight back and nearly get over the line. On his inning at 11: Yeah it was great to contribute with the bat and try get the team over the line but unfortunately it was not the case today. Happy to have provided some entertainment to all watching 😊
