Edgware v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 11 Jun 2022 at 1.00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
The 4s headed to Garston to play Edgware 1s at Watford Town's home ground. On a bright clear afternoon, upon losing the toss 4s were inserted to bat. A decision that the 4s captain would have taken had he won the toss, the pitch was bone dry, cut short and with a shortish boundary, overall excellent batting conditions.
Openers Inshal and JB launched the innings, however early erratic bowling forced Inshal into playing and missing, ultimately finding the outside edge and being caught at slip in the 1st over. JB was joined by Sam, both batted diligently and watchfully and kept the runs ticking. In the 8th over Sam was undone by a yorker with the score at 17 for 2. JB was joined at the crease by Saras, both batsmen showed positivity striking bad balls and defending well. JB smashed a full toss for 4 through mid-on to keep the runs flowing whilst Saras kept rotating the strike. In the 17th over JB was caught at mid-on to a low catch and the score stood at 42 for for 3. Skipper Lal strode onto the crease with the intent to batten down the hatches and hold the fort whilst the innings was re-built. Saras fell in the next over to a quicker delivery, quickly followed by Jaymin and the score at drinks was 46 for 5. Usman batting at 7 joined the skipper and a partnership of 46 invaluable runs was added to the score. Both batsman scoring when the opportunity arose and forcing several fielding errors with well timed running. Lal fell to to what can only described as a non-shot as he tried to trick the bowler into changing his line, only to have his leg stump clipped by a straight one. New batsmen Janineel continued to apply pressure with some lusty blows and was ably supported by Lourdes who also showed fantastic timing with the bat. 4s innings ended in the 39th over with the score on 129 all out. A sublime ending given the wobbly start against one of the top teams in division 12 south.
After a 20 min interlude for tea, Edgware began their innings losing their first wicket in the first over to a mis-timed drive off Maaz. Jubilant celebrations followed, the 4s were definitely in the hunt. The 2nd wicket fell soon after, Lourdes bowling with fire and such venomocity that the batsmen found the pace and accuracy unplayable. After the opening bowlers completed their initial spells , skipper Lal switched the bowling attack to Saras and Dhiren. Both picked up a wicket a piece and despite Edgware keeping up with the run rate, 4s continued to apply pressure through some great catching and tight fielding. Alas the score was probably 30 to 40 runs short of a defendable target and Edgware wrapped up in the 23rd over.
Plenty of positives in both the batting and bowling departments today. Strong wicket keeping plus good close fielding made the opposition really work for their runs. Their body language at the start of the innings suggested this would be a walk-over but we displayed incredible resistance and a combative attitude throughout. Super performance all round, we are still middle of the league table and plenty to play for to hit the promotion quartile. Onwards....
