Chorleywood II v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 27 May 2023 at 12pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket
Match report
Town travelled to Chorleywood on a beautiful summers day and acting captain Loomba lost the toss and was asked to field.
Daly and Lawrence, a reunited partnerships thanks to Lawrences return to cricket, both started off well on what was a very good batting track, causing plenty of issues for the Chorleywood openers despite some runs flowing for the opposition side. Kyle was unlucky not to get more than 2 wickets after a couple of dropped catches in the gully region where he place two gully fielders, both with squandered opportunities. After managing to dismiss the openers, the ball was then handed to another reliable pair in Anjum and Vadgama. Anjum bowled super consistent lines and lengths, varying between armballs and off spinners, a spell that was far too good for the batsmen. Likewise, Veer bowled a consistent 4th stump line and getting the ball to swing away with plenty of swings and misses from the batsmen. With iqbal picking up 3 wickets (which could have been 5!), Chorleywood were struggling on 87-6 however a resilient and patient knock from Davies helped re-establish Chorleywoods footing in the game. The ball was handed to Madhavan and Mobeen, both bowling really tidy spells. A flurry of runs came at the end once the quick bowlers returned and Chorleywood finished on a respectable 193 off their 50 overs.
In response, Town openers Madhavan and Agarwal started off in quick fashion, but both fell within 6 overs at 39/2 followed quickly by Vadgama. Gairola and Loomba put on a useful partnership to 91/4 after 16 overs before Loombas demise - town well ahead of the run rate. Unfortunately, a mini collapse entailed and town found themselves at 92/6 after Anjum and Burt both failed to trouble the scorers and in a really sticky situation. With Gairola going strong, he needed some support and was able supported by Gordhandas who stayed with him at the crease for 33 minutes but after losing Gordhandas and Lawrence in quick succession, the game seemed a long way away from winning with Town now 135/8 after 28 overs and needing another 59 runs with only 2 wickets left.
Mobeen, a young 22 year old spin bowler playing only his second game for the 1s batted with the temperament and experience that a 60 year old veteran would be proud of. His role was simply to stay there whilst Gairola did what he could to take us close - that is exactly what he did. He faced 68 balls and batted for 71 minutes for his 11 runs, patting the ball back and picking up occasional singles whilst Gairola was smashing the bowlers all over the ground - giving Town a chance of victory. The scoreboard kept going up and up and time wasnt the problem, wickets were.
With only 6 runs left to win, Mobeens heroic innings game to an end but the most capable number 11 in the league, Jack Daly ran superbly between the wickets to ensure Town were able to pluck victory from the jaws of defeat. Gairola finished with an unbeaten 77 - one of the finest innings whilst chasing in a number of years. Whilst losing wickets all around him, he kept his cool, never panicked and trusted that if he stayed there and put the bad ball away, he would come out victories. A chanceless innings (all recorded on his go pro - you can subscribe to his youtube channel 'My Cricket Moments') and a win for the ages. For someone who has played most of his cricket in the 2s and looking to establish himself in the 1s - he can be proud that he has proven in his first two games, not only that he is capable at achieving at this level but actually can be one of our most important players.
