Sandridge v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 08 Jul 2023 at 12pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
Town travelled to Sandridge looking to get back on the wining run after last week’s loss. With bad weather forecast Town won the toss and chose to field first however, thunder & lightning with heavy rain meant start was delayed by couple of hours with 2 pm start time and a game reduced to 33 overs per side. Credit goes to Sandridge team for all the effort in ensuring it wasn’t a wash out!
Town struggled with wet conditions as it was difficult to grip the ball. Vadgama in-particular struggling to deliver his usual economical spell. J Daly on the other end was absolutely outstanding as Sandridge openers struggled to play him. Daly getting 2 quick wickets leaving Sandridge on 29/2 in 8 overs. Wet conditions meant Town’s usual spin early tactic had to be replaced by Aggarwal coming on to bowl after making a successful return to bowling last week. And he got a wicket straight away in his first over. However, Sandridge were still scoring at 5 rpo. Despite the rain outfield was lightning quick and Z Ahmed was scoring all around the ground. I Anjum who’s been the best bowler for Town this season was tight and economical. Skipper Patel removed Ahmed who scored fine 57. Vadgama coming back for his 2nd spell got couple of wickets but Sandridge got to 163/8 after their 33 overs. Target Town felt was below par with sun out and outfield getting even quicker. Credit to Town bowlers for making the best of worst condition.
Town came out to bat with aggression. Loomba opening the batting in Madhavan’s absence put away 2 full tosses in the first over (some say should have been all 4 full tosses he faced in the over). Loomba quickly raced to 17 but then tried one shot too many and departed with Town on 26/1 after 5 overs. Aggarwal was playing supportive inning till now took over and started scoring aggressively. Him and Gairola who also got promoted to bat high put on 37 runs partnership in no time. But just when Town were looking comfortable Aggarwal departed in usual fashion giving an easy catch to long off. However, he set the platform for Town to chase the target having scored 27. Vadgama and Gairola then put on 58 runs partnership getting Town closer to their target. However, with 43 required from 9 overs Vadgama got out. If anyone knows where we can buy a t-shirt that says “why always me?” please get in touch because only Vadgama can find different ways to get out. Gairola trying to send the ball to Mars (Taking over from Loomba after he failed to do so) lobbed it up in the air which should have been an easy return catch for the bowler but somehow he dropped it and it hit the stumps at non-strikers end where Vadgama was having a nice stroll out side the crease and got run out. Although Town were on course with the required run rate skipper promoted himself to bat at 5 and finish the game. And he did exactly that with aggressive slogs around the ground hitting 4 sixes. Gairola on the other end kept going and when Town needed 3 to win he was on 45, so tried to send the ball to mars again to get to his 50 but got stumped. However, his inning was top class which deserved a 50. Skipper hit a six to win the game Town getting home with 6 wickets in hand.
Skipper Patel spoke after the game: In the end it was a comfortable win and big credit to all the bowlers for the effort in tricky conditions. Top order set the platform for the chase however, all batters getting a good start at the top must start converting it to big score.
Town will host Reed II next week looking to get another win.
