Wheathampstead v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 12 Aug 2023 at 12pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 8 runs (D/L)
Match report
Town travelled to Wheathampstead knowing only a win will keep them in promotion battle. Having lost the toss Town were asked to bat first. Earlier rain meant start delayed with 46 overs game! It was another exciting moment for Town as young S Kadam was making his 1s debut and was presented with a cap by skipper before the game!
And Town got off to a flyer in terms of losing wickets. Aggarwal got out in usual fashion if you have read last 5/6 match reports you know how he got out! Madhavan, Gairola, Vadgama and Kadam all out leaving Town on 38/5 and in big trouble! However, just when Wheathampstead thought they were going to wrap up the inning early Burt & Anjum had different plan. Both batters who’s been out of form started building a partnership. They ran great between the wicket and punished anything loose. Suddenly run started flowing. Both batters reached well deserved 50’s. They put on 97 runs partnership before Anjum fell for well-played 51. Burt carried on till end and finished 63* with Town posting 192/7 after 46 overs.
Town were well on top as Wheathampstead heads dropped coming off the field. However, Town didn’t start well with the ball. Ever reliable K Lawrence struggled to control his line and ended up breaking Gordy’s record of 12 ball over going for 18 balls over. The famous take a blow Kyle line wasn’t needed. Wheathampstead raced to 48/0 after 6 overs. Aggarwal came on to replace Lawrence and straight away got the breakthrough however runs continued to flow. Town’s bowler of the season Anjum struggled for once as there was no spin on the offer. Wheathampstead were 85/2 after 16 overs. Skipper brought himself on and removed Wheathampstead skipper with his very first ball and that followed 3 more wickets with Anjum getting a wicket they were 126/8 after 24.1 overs. But just when everything looked good for Town heavy rain had other ideas. Play was stopped for more than an hour and it was getting tense with fear of no more play being possible. However, sun came out and it was decided conditions were good enough to resume the game. Fair play to Wheathampstead for coming back on to finish the game. Revised overs/target meant they needed 151 from 30 overs. This meant from the remaining 5.5 overs they only needed 25 runs. Wheathampstead just started rotating strike taking singles. Skipper finished his spell and on the other end Madhavan was bowling with tight line and length. Equation was them needing 10 to win from 2 overs. Town’s McGrath came into bowl 29th over and conceded just 2 runs picking up a wicket. As he’s done it many times before that was a special over from Vadgama. Madhavan started the last over with 2 dot balls and on the 3rd ball Wheathampstead were all out trying to run 2. Giving Town victory by 7 runs.
Skipper K Patel spoke after the game: Our top order needs to learn to value their wicket. We need to learn from our mistakes. Special partnership that from Burt and Anjum. Possible up there with one of the best we’ve seen. Our effort in the field was exceptional led by our young guns Kadam and Shah. On his bowling performance: yeah, always good to pick up crucial wickets and help the team out. Overall, absolutely delighted with every single player with the way they rough all day today.
Town will host Cockfosters who best league leaders this week so it will be no doubt tough game.
