Chorleywood III v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 24 Jun 2023 at 1.00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
NTCC 3s travelled to Division 10s toppers Chorleywood 3s . It was another hot but cloudy day. Skipper Lal won the toss (if only we were awarded points for winning the toss... LOL !!) and decided to have a bat on a dry but grassy strip.
Our top order is now starting to resemble a Greek Tragedy.....heroes striving for greatness but flawed by self destruction. After 11 overs we were in a desperate position of 40 for 5, both openers (Pradip and Abdullah) pushing too quickly and getting caught and bowled respectively. The next 3 batsmen (Meet, Sageeran & Jay) fell to tight bowling sandwiched between a lack of patience to wait for the bad deliveries and see through the opening bowling partnership. At this point it was looking like we were heading for an early tea, however skipper Lal had different intentions. Having repaired his bat that morning with super glue and sticky tape, it was time to carve out a partnership and prove his bat repair skills. At the other end a very determined Amit joined the fray and two batsmen set about starting to plug the holes in the sinking ship. Early strategy was to play out the openers and both batsmen were able to capitalise on the loose deliveries. After a strategically requested drinks break at 15 overs, Amit started to accelerate the run rate peppering the boundary at regular intervals and defending with common sense and stoicism. Lal continued to rotate the strike and by the 25th over the score had reached 90 ( a 50 run partnership to keep the batting boat afloat). Lal fell to a leg side full toss LBW (snigger snigger) however Amit (71) continued the tempo with Rudra and Atul to push the score to 156. Yet another superbly timed and balanced innings from Amit, a lesson for the rest of the batting order in patience and fortitude.
After tea the sun decided to turn-up the temperature dial and NTCC 3s set about piercing the Chorleywood batting line-up. Opening hostile spells from Rudra (2 wickets) and Charlie (1 wicket) had the opening batsmen dancing on their creases. Both bowlers were impressive with line and length , Rudra getting good movement off the pitch whilst Charlie was able to vary his pace to keep the batsmen guessing. The first two wickets fell within 3 overs, however the next 17 overs saw the opposition build a partnership to take the score to 82. Despite multiple bowling changes, self inflicted errors through sloppy fielding and dropped catches allowed Chorleywood to maintain the momentum. By the 35th over it was ALL OVER and NTCC 3s rued the game that could have been...
Onwards to next week, we need to learn that Patience will bring Partnerships and Partnerships will bring runs AND frustrate the opposition. Great to see 100% commitment all round, we are slowly solidifying our core team.
