Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Northchurch on Sat 08 Jun 2024 at 12:00 PM
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won By 90 runs
Match report
On an all weather Saturday, Town hosted historical rivals Northchurch CC in their 5th league game of the season. In what is becoming a tradition, skipper Madhavan once again lost the toss and was put in to bat by the opposition. As the Town openers Akshay Loomba and Nischay Madhavan walked out, the weather turned to the worse as it started to rain, but determined and unaffected, the openers saw off the new ball expertly putting 45 runs on the board. However, Loomba getting slightly greedy, rocked on to his back foot to a ball that wasn't there and saw his stumps tumble behind. As skipper Madhavan batting with a broken finger, riding through the pain continued on, wickets fell regularly around him, with Humayun Wassim and Sangeet Patel falling for low scores. Madhavan was then joined by Town MVP Iqbal Anjum who together stitched together a crucial and much needed partnership which would prove pivotal to the eventual result. As things steadily ticked along, Madhavan was caught out attempting to increase the run rate on 83, his highest score for the 1S. Soon after this, Anjum also fell to a ball which seemingly stuck into the two paced wicket. Determined to not let all the good work go to waste, Andy Burt, joined with Veer Vadgama put on a crucial partnership to steady the ship in the later stages. However, Vadgama fell trying to accelerate, and Krunal Patel met the same fate very soon after also. Burt then joined up with Ibaad Kayani and the pair guided Town to a well made 218 on a tricky surface.
In response, Town's very own Rudra Shah struck early twice and dented Northchurch's innings early. However, one of the openers, had other ideas flaying the ball around the ground hitting some lusty blows bringing Northchurch back into the game. Shah however drew the openers edge, only for it to put down in the slips. Building on some luck and lusty batting, the Northchurch batsmen steadily built their comeback but a moment of absolute brilliance from Veer Vadgama put an end to partnership. This caught and bowled described by most on the field as one of the catches as of the season so far. Once again as wicket taking slowed down, Towns most successful spin pair Krunal Patel and Iqbal Anjum came on together for combined figures of 18 overs, 44 runs and 5 wickets. They bowled beautifully in tandem, restricting the Northchurch batsmen and making it almost impossible at times to score. They also managed to bowl all these overs in one single spell, which proved easily to be the best spell in the game, once again proving the importance of Bowling partnerships. Town eventually wrapped Northchurch up in the 38th over winning the game by 90 runs.
Speaking after the game in a haze of smoke and rum, skipper Madhavan remarked: Brilliant win. batsmen showed a lot of class and grit on a tough wicket. Bowlers, doing bowlers things, their consistency this year has been admirable to say the least. 2 wins on the bounce and 3rd on the table, but super early in the season and best take it game by game. Pleased with the team moral which is always on the up and happy with the determination showed by the boys over the last few weeks, long may this continue.
