Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Kings Langley II on Sat 01 Jun 2024 at 01:00 p.m.
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 22 runs
Match report
Town 2nd XI welcomed Kings Langley 2nd XI to Chestnut Avenue, determined to bounce back from last week's defeat. Despite recent poor weather, they managed to get the game on. Town lost the toss and were asked to bat first on a tricky pitch.
Openers, skipper Ramawat and vice-captain Shah, began cautiously, aiming to lay a solid foundation. Both struggled to get going, particularly Ramawat, but extras kept the scoreboard ticking. Unfortunately, both were dismissed in quick succession when they tried to accelerate the scoring. In the middle overs, Vaghela and John formed a solid partnership, capitalizing on loose deliveries. Just as they looked set, Town lost Vaghela, who had been playing well with his lofted shots but got out attempting to up the ante. With 10 overs left, John and Chhalani kept the momentum going by running hard and playing opportunistic shots. Chhalani played innovatively, while John exhibited his usual solidity. Town seemed poised for a 200+ target, but wickets fell consistently, and Town's tail failed to contribute, resulting in a total of 173/10 in 38.3 overs – about 30 runs short of their goal.
After a 20-minute break, Town returned to the field to defend their total. Opening bowlers Agarwal and P Patel began with control, but Langley's openers had a clear plan, taking risks and playing shots whenever the ball was pitched up, racing to 40 in 9 overs. Desperate to break the partnership, the skipper planned to bring in Shah to replace Patel. However, Patel insisted on another over and did indeed delivered, getting the well-set opener out lbw. The other Langley opener maintained the momentum, showcasing skills learned from playing with Malinga and Tharanga at the under-15 level. K Shah replaced P Patel and immediately bowled beautifully, delivering unplayable lengths. In his full 8-over spell, Shah took 3 crucial wickets, including the well-set opener.
Town continued to take wickets at regular intervals, with strong contributions from Puwar and J Patel towards the end. Just when the game seemed over for Langley, their 10th wicket partnership added 30 runs, bringing them within 30 runs of the target with 4 overs left. P Patel, returning for another spell, broke the partnership and secured a well-deserved win for Town.
It was a tough game, but a much-needed win. Achieving victory through a team effort is a skipper's delight, and that's exactly what we accomplished today.
MoM: K Shah for his outstanding bowling, demonstrating consistency in delivering tough lengths (though his couple of experimental slow deliveries did receive the punishment they deserved ;-) )
