Bushey II v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 08 Jun 2024 at 01:00 p.m.
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 72 runs
Match report
Town travelled to neighbouring Bushy following a week that finally felt like the beginning of a potential British summer. However, by Saturday morning, the weather had turned typical: cloudy, dark, cold, and drizzly, with a clear forecast for the later part of the afternoon.
Unfortunately, Town lost the toss and were asked to bat in conditions that favoured the bowlers. The new opening pair for the 2nd XI this season, R Aggarwal and D Gairola, started cautiously, giving Town a solid start. Once settled, Aggarwal began dispatching any loose deliveries to the boundary, showcasing his class. On the other hand, Gairola struggled to find his trademark flair and eventually got out when the score was 62 in 14 overs.
Vaghela joined Aggarwal but got out cheaply while trying to keep up with the pace. Skipper Ramawat then walked in and started building a partnership with Aggarwal, who was well set by this time. Together, they added 50 runs before Aggarwal fell to what most batsmen dread: slow, loopy, accurate bowling. Aggarwal attempted to launch the ball into the stratosphere, a feat even a SpaceX rocket might fail to achieve.
Just as Town seemed poised for a big total, they lost another two quick wickets. M Patel and J Patel both got out cheaply, leaving a worrying scoreline of 136/5 in 30 overs. The skipper and vice-captain, determined to convert this solid start into a competitive total, Skipper's advice to his vice who just walked-in - "Tushar, this is his last ball of the slow loopy spell, can you please block? Tushar nods with a yes" but tries to launch the next delivery into the space just like R Aggarwal did and was luck to survive as the ball just missed the stumps while skipper & determination were watching this with agony from the other end! Nonetheless both started rebuilding the innings and added another valuable 30 runs before Ramawat got out, trying to accelerate the scoring. The lower-order batsmen, T Shah, P Patel, and K Puwar, then chipped in with crucial runs, taking Town's total to a healthy 210/8 in their 40 overs.
After a pleasant sit together team meal in the sun, Town returned to the field to defend their total. P Patel opened the bowling with M Agarwal. Patel found his rhythm right from the first ball and got the Bushy opener, who looked threatening, caught in the covers. Patel bowled beautifully but was unlucky not to get more wickets. M Agarwal, from the other end, faced punishment from Bushy batsman Sohail whenever a loose ball was presented, but ultimately had the last laugh by getting Sohail caught behind.
A bowling change brought K Shah and Puwar into action, and they returned to "business as usual," taking a wicket each and breaking the back of Bushy's run chase. Bushy tried to survive the middle overs, but by the 30th over, the game was all but over for them. Moments of brilliance in the last 10 overs included a direct run-out from P Patel, a return to bowling for M Patel, and a glimpse of Gairola's bowling capabilities.
In the end, Town won the game comfortably, thanks to a true team effort. The match showcased how to bat in tough conditions, the importance of partnerships, accelerating towards the end, and bowling with tight lines and lengths even when under pressure. It was a good game overall with plenty of fun along the way. We move forward.
