Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Flitwick III on Sat 29 Jun 2024 at 01:00 p.m.
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 14 runs
Match report
Finally, the rain gods decided to take a break on Saturday, blessing us with a sunny day. The beautiful weather made the day even more special as India was playing in the T20 World Cup final. There was a lot of pressure to win the toss and elect to field first, so the team could watch the game from the pavilion. Skipper Ramawat, who has been unlucky with tosses lately, hoped to continue that streak for the obvious reasons, However, the skipper won the toss and had to make the difficult but right decision to bat first. The opposition skipper cheekily did offer to see if Town would like to change their decision to bat first in case their players wanted to watch the game ;-)
Town started their innings with Aggarwal and Shah, aiming to make full use of the batting conditions. Aggarwal, in sublime form, was at his best from one end, but Town lost Shah in the 7th over with the score at 40. Skipper Ramawat walked in at number 3 and tried to build a partnership with Aggarwal. However, he found it difficult to rotate the strike as the pitch started to break-up and turn, with Flitwick’s spinners exploiting the conditions perfectly. Aggarwal continued to keep the scoreboard ticking, but he eventually got out for 47 possibly due to lack of support from the other end.
Gairola came in at number 4 to stabilize the innings, but Town lost another two quick wickets—Ramawat and debutant Karan Rajani—leaving the score at 100/4 in 25 overs. Mobeen, at number 6, supported Gairola, and together they added 40 runs. Gairola, well-set, reached his fifty with some classic cross-bat drives. Just when the tempo started to pick up, Town lost both batsmen in quick succession, leaving the score at 151/6 in 33 overs.
This brought in Town’s own TT (Turbo Twins), Patel and Puwar, who showcased their flair by adding 60 runs in the last 6 overs. Their partnership provided the much-needed boost, and Town ended their innings at 209 in 40 overs, feeling confident heading into the tea break.
After a 25-minute break, Town returned to defend their total. The new ball was shared between Patel and another debutant, Jeet Rajani. Both bowled beautifully upfront, with Patel removing both Flitwick openers early, leaving them at 17/2 in 6 overs. Although Jeet didn’t take any wickets, he bowled with excellent control, making it difficult for the Flitwick batsmen to score.
Flitwick’s number 3 and 4 started to build their innings slowly, gradually pressing the accelerator and bringing Flitwick back into the game by scoring 77 for 2 wickets in 18 overs. Desperate for a breakthrough, the skipper turned to Jabarkhail, who delivered immediately by uprooting the middle stump of Flitwick’s well-set number 4 on while he was on 46. Jabarkhail ripped through the middle order, taking a wicket in each of his four overs before being taken off unfortunately due to two waist-high full tosses. Flitwick was now at 140/8 in 28 overs.
The game seemed all but over for Flitwick, but their number 8 and 9 had other ideas. They scored freely, taking advantage of anything loose, and quickly brought the score to 185/8 in 36 overs, needing 25 runs in 24 deliveries. Town, desperate to break this partnership, turned back to the opening bowlers. Just when needed, Jeet Rajani produced a beautiful delivery to bowl Flitwick’s number 10, who had scored a valuable 34 runs and was looking dangerous to take the game away from Town.
A loud applause erupted from the Town balcony in support of the Town 2nd XI and the Indian cricket team, who both won from difficult situations.
It was a truly tough game with many twists and turns, one that drained the players and took a lot out of them. As often is the case with this team, everyone played their part in the win—Aggarwal and Gairola at the top, followed by some Diwali fireworks from Patel and Puwar, and later fine bowling from Patel and Jeet Rajani, supported by Mobeen. However, the star of the day was Jabarkhail, who ripped through Flitwick’s middle order with his sheer pace at a crucial time.
Despite a depleted batting lineup, Town executed their plans wisely and played like true champions. Well done to all for sticking to their roles and bringing this one home. A truly deserving win that we all should be very proud of!
