Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Bushey II on Sat 10 Aug 2024 at 01:00 p.m.
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 63 runs
Match report
After playing two consecutive away games, the Town 2nd XI finally returned home to welcome the Busy 2nd XI. Playing at home after a long time, a few things looked different, except the weather. Yes, you got it: dark, cloudy, and cold.
Town won the toss and chose to bat first on what appeared to be a decent track for setting a competitive total.
Town’s openers, Aggarwal and T Shah, walked out to the middle with hopes of laying a strong foundation. Unfortunately, Shah (1) was dismissed early, while Aggarwal was figuring out the 'pace of the pitch' while going about his usual business. Vaghela walked in at number 3, and together with Aggarwal, they began to tick the scoreboard over briskly. Just as both looked settled, Town lost a well-set Aggarwal (33) with the score at 76-2 in 14 overs. Gairola came in at 4, joining Vaghela, who from the other end carried on with his form from the last game, punishing anything in his zone. Together, they collected another 30 runs before Vaghela (44) got out to a very slow, loopy delivery. John came in at 5 and couldn’t get going either, leaving Town at 128/4 in 25 overs.
Town, having had a good start, were well set at this point to post a decent score but were now in a precarious position. Skipper Ramawat came in at 6 and started to build a partnership with Gairola, who looked well-set at the other end. However, they got into a horrible mix-up, resulting in Town losing their key batsman Gairola, which was a big jolt to the team’s plans. The revised plan now was simple: play the full 40 overs and cross the 200 mark. This is exactly what Town did, although they kept losing wickets. On their way to 40 overs, they also kept building small partnerships. At the end of their 40 overs, Town scored an impressive
216/9
.
After a quick break featuring delicious homemade
'masala chai' and 'parathas,'
Town took the field to defend their total.
Rajani and Halai shared the new ball, with Rajani bowling particularly well, demonstrating excellent control and securing an early breakthrough with the help of an equally excellent catch from Halai. P Patel joined the attack in the 8th over and, after a brief shaky start, settled into his usual rhythm, supported by R Shah from the other end, who displayed great control, giving nothing away to Busy’s batsmen. The pressure of the increasing required run rate began to mount. Puwar came into the attack, fresh from a break in the Alpes, and continued the tight lines and eventually broke through the Bushy resistance, trapping the opener in front of the wicket. At the drinks break, Busy were 70/2 after 20 overs. Town’s bowlers maintained their discipline, while Busy’s batsmen continued to resist, without much intent, which only played into Town’s hands. Eventually, Busy were bowled out for 153 in 38.2 overs.
This comprehensive 63-run victory for Town was a testament to the power of
partnerships
. Town’s batsmen consistently built partnerships, leading to a solid score of over 200, which was always going to be tough to chase. Later, the bowlers excelled in defending the target, with standout performances by Rajani and young Rudy, who showed great control. Overall, it was an excellent
team effort
, which has become the hallmark of this side. We move on to the next one!
Man of the Match:
Jeet Rajani for his excellent bowling performance.
