Old Haberdashers' CC 1st XI v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 24 May 2025 at 12:00
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report Town rolled up to Old Haberdashers, hotter than peri-peri chips from Pepe's, aiming for their third win and to inflate Skipper Anjum's ego to the size of the moon. After winning the toss, it was a WWE Royal Rumble between the Town lads to decide whether to bat or bowl. Anjum, ever the strategist, saw a damp wicket and thought, "Bowling it is! Let's make these Haberdashers' batters wish they'd stayed in bed!"

J Daly, opening the bowling, started with two deliveries so bad they should have been classified as criminal offenses. We all thought, "Oh dear, here we go..." But then, BAM! First legal delivery, wicket! Turns out, it was all part of his master plan to lull them into a false sense of security (or maybe he just got lucky). S Malik, not to be outdone, opened with two wides that nearly took out the umpire, followed by a wicket. The dynamic duo then used the Haberdashers' batsmen as human bowling pins, knocking them over with ruthless efficiency. Five wickets each – strikes all around! Old Haberdashers all out for 63! Rumor has it, the Old Habs were actually auditioning for a Yorkshire Tea advert, showcasing just how quickly you can brew a cuppa when you're desperate to get off the pitch.

Chasing the total, N Madhavan, clearly eager to get to his party in central London, slapped a couple of boundaries before departing, continuing his quest to find his batting form (last seen somewhere in 2018). But fear not! We all know a big score is just around the corner... probably. D Gairola, meanwhile, was treating the Haberdashers' bowling like a personal buffet, tucking into any loose deliveries. D Raj then decided to join the quick-out party, falling LBW to Tapuria. Gairola followed, a quick 22 before getting out to a ball that can only be described as a "pea-roller" – so bad it was almost insulting. S Patel then got triggered LBW (the umpire clearly had a vendetta), leaving Town 4 down and needing just one run. J Han had promised a dil-scoop for the winning runs. And, by God, he delivered! Down on one knee, scooping a full ball to the boundary like a true cricketing maverick! Town won by 6 wickets!

Skipper I Anjum, basking in the glory, said: "The pitch was a bowler's paradise, and Daly and Malik exploited it like pros! Maybe we got a bit cocky chasing the total, but hey, a win's a win! Three from three – we're unstoppable!" (He was probably also giving his ego a good shine.)

Next week, Town face Hitchin II in a top-of-the-table clash. Get your popcorn ready, folks, because it's going to be a battle of the titans... or at least, a mildly competitive game of cricket.
