Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Hoddesdon CC Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 14 Jun 2025 at 12:00
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 130 runs
Match report
The captain, Anjum, was feeling positive and decided we should bat first. He had a lot of faith that our top order would finally play well. It was funny because things didn't go as planned!
Loomba, opening the batting, was so eager to return to his dog-sitting duties that he gifted the opposition a wicket with a full toss so inviting, even our umpire Colin could've smashed it for four. Word on the street is, by 1 PM, Loomba had devoured more Wenzel baguettes than runs he'd scored. At least he's consistent...consistently spending 95% of the match spectating with his teammates. Gairola, however, continued his boundary-smashing form, providing a glimmer of hope amidst the top-order chaos. Then came Han's birthday curse – an LBW decision that even he couldn't believe, especially after middling the ball. Loomba could sympathise. S. Patel, desperately seeking runs, joined the procession back to the pavilion. Unlike Loomba, at least Patel has his wicket-keeping to fall back on, otherwise he would also be spending 95 overs with the boys on/off the field. They say he's struggling to buy a run, but maybe he should try online shopping. If you want to learn how to walk on thin ice contact Loomba and S Patel. Just when we thought things couldn't get worse, Burt, fresh from his stellar performance for the 2s, ensured the top order didn't cross 50 without losing four wickets. Talk about teamwork! Gairola took some big risks when batting, which made the Town fans excited and a little scared. He was dropped three times, leading Hoddesdon fielders to joke that he provided more catching practice than their actual warm-up. Fair play to Gairola for making most of the chances he was given.
Enter Madhavan, the man who's clearly allergic to top-order collapses. Together, he and Gairola forged a 94-run partnership, rescuing Town from the depths of despair. Madhavan looked effortless, a true batting maestro. Gairola eventually fell for a well-played 77, leaving Madhavan to continue his heroics. Skipper Anjum joined Madhavan, and together they propelled Town to a respectable 240/8. Madhavan finished unbeaten on 89, narrowly missing a well-deserved ton. After a slow start to the season, he's silenced the doubters (especially S. Malik) with his recent performances.
After the break, Daly and Malik started with a tight spell of bowling. With Malik keeping it tight one end Daly was picking up the wickets. Vadgama, returning to the team, was on fire, rattling through Hoddesdon's batting lineup. He was unlucky not to get a hat-trick when the umpire gave an LBW decision against him.
With the game practically wrapped up at 64/7, birthday boy Han was thrown the ball and promptly took a wicket, thanks to a simple catch by Burt at short cover. However, Burt, seemingly confused about which team he was playing for, decided to outdo Vadgama by completing a hat-trick of dropped catches. Maybe he was just trying to give Hoddesdon a fighting chance? K Patel then mopped up the last two wickets, sealing a 130-run victory for Town.
Skipper Anjum spoke after the game: "I'm tired of seeing the top order not taking responsibility with the bat, but what a knock by Madhavan! Gairola batted superbly himself, and he just needs to play his natural innings as always. Very pleased with the fielding effort and great spell of bowling by everyone, especially Vadgama. I just wish he played more games, but I guess that's like me wishing to win the EuroMillions. Six out of six, and very proud of how we're playing right now. We're just going to take one game at a time, and focus now shifts to Hatfield & Crusaders next week."
