Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Old Haberdashers' CC 1st XI on Sat 26 Jul 2025 at 12:00
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 41 runs
Match report
Northwood Town welcomed old rivals Old Haberdashers on a sunny Saturday, hoping to bounce back after two consecutive defeats. Skipper Iqbal Anjum wasn’t entirely sure whether he wanted to bat, bowl, or just go home early, so it was a good toss to lose, with Old Habs opting to bowl first.
As has become tradition, openers Deepak Gairola and Rohit Bahl got Town off to a flying start, racing to 51 in just 9 overs by dispatching anything loose to the boundary. But, true to recent form, Gairola failed to convert his start and departed, followed shortly by Deepak Raj after a typically aggressive cameo. Bahl continued to tick along nicely, but the middle order collapsed in spectacularly familiar fashion. Both Madhavan and Anjum fell cheaply—prompting some to blame the pitch, though others recognised it as simply “Town doing Town things.” Loomba and Sangeet Patel upheld their solemn vow to not trouble the scorer and came and went with the urgency of someone making instant noodles. When Bahl finally departed for 34 (again throwing his wicket away after doing the hard work), Town found themselves floundering at 143/7 after 35 overs, looking set for a sub-par total. But once again, the lower order came to the rescue. Promoted to 8 and 9, Jack Daly and Sajid Shafique Malik steadied the ship and then launched an all-out assault. Daly, in particular, batted with the confidence of a man who had forgotten he’s not technically an all-rounder, smashing the bowlers to all parts (Rumours are Loomba and S Patel have already reached out to J Daly for some batting coaching). Their 69-run partnership in 11 overs dragged Town back into the game, and with handy late runs from Krunal Patel and Keval Shah, Town closed on a strong 247/9 from their 50 overs, with Daly finishing on a brilliant unbeaten 56.
After the break, Town took the field full of belief—and with Daly clearly not finished for the day. Opening the bowling alongside Malik, he struck early to remove an opener, while Malik got the other, leaving Old Habs at 51/2. Skipper Anjum then joined the act, picking up two quick wickets to put Town firmly on top. But just as it started to look too comfortable, a partnership developed between Lewis Jenkins and Hasit Mehta, who began to rebuild and rotate the strike with increasing ease. Krunal Patel bowled a tight spell to slow the scoring, and his efforts paid off when he removed both Jenkins and Shingadia in short order. Mehta, though, looked unfazed and continued to score freely, bringing the required rate down and giving Town fans a few nervous moments. With the game hanging in the balance, Anjum returned for his second spell and delivered again, removing Mehta for a dangerous 72. From there, there was only one man to finish the job—Jack “Do-It-All” Daly, who returned to grab the final two wickets and seal a 41-run victory for Town.
His heroics with bat and ball earned him a well-deserved Man of the Match, with Anjum praising the performance post-match: “We keep getting good starts and collapsing—something we’ve got to fix. But what an innings from Jack, and he bowled just as well when we needed it.” With momentum back on their side,
Town now turn their attention to a must-win clash next week away at league leaders Hitchin. No pressure, lads.
