Letchworth Garden City CC 2nd XI v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 04 Jul 2026 at 12:00
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 11 runs
Match report
Town travelled to Letchworth Garden City for the last game of the first round. Having won the last 2 thrilling games, Town felt confident and wanted to continue the winning run. Town skipper won the toss and elected to bat first on what seemed like a flat wicket. Rohit stated in his usual manner smashing it all over the place. Befoe long Town were at 50/0 in just about 7 overs. Ravi being his cautious self tried to get the run rate going but got out after scoring 14. Rohit joined by Nischay kept the scoreboard ticking. Rohit got to his 50 with a beautiful straight six and continued to punish the opposition bowlers for any bad balls. He eventually finished for a well played 70 off 50 balls. jesant playing his first game started cautiously and kept the score ticking with Nishchay at first who scored 19, then Keeran who seemed to be finally in form playing some good strokes before getting out for 22. Iqbal didnt trouble the scorers much scoring only 10 trying to take it deep so have wickets in hamd for the final 10 overs. Vishal made a quick 13 off only 12 balls before he was out adjudged LBW. Jack who has been the saviour a few times with his batting, joined Jesant and played nicely, ticking the score along and both getting boundaries whenever there was a bad ball. Town finished with 238/7, a good total but felt about 20/30 runs short.
Letchworth coming in to batneeding 239 to win, started cautiously as Jack and Sajid were right on the money from the start with their excellent line and length. But as the outfield was lightning fast even the slightest push in the gap meant it went to the boundary. There was a huge LBW appeal turned down off Sajid and a dropped sharp chance behind the stumps also off Sajid in the first few overs would have been a terrific start but wasnt to be. The bowlers kept hitting the good areas and eventually Sajid got the first breakthrough with a leg before wicket. Another partnership between Houlder and the opener Elliot saw Letchworth getting slowly towards the target but at a slow rate. The tight line and length bowling by the opening bowlers and then Nish and Iqbal meant the run rate kept creeping up. Another bowling change saw Keval and jesant into the attack. Keval seemed like he was on steroids as he was bowling quickest I have seen him bowling. But as the outfield was lightning fast, the batters were taking advantage of his pace and got a few boundaries. But keval fought back and fought back brilliantly knocking Houlderand Harris clean bowled in 2 consecutive overs to get the oppo 4 down. Elliot kept holding on, with a couple of scares. By the time the 2nd drinks break after the 34th overs, the run rate had climbed to almost 6.5. Keval continued after drinks with Iqbal. Iqbal got Kilby out bowled soon after and Keval kept bowling his bullets from the other end till he got Elliot bowled for a well played 78. After that it seemed like Letchworth were trying to go at almost every ball they could to catch up on the runrate. Munson was hitting the ball hard trying to get ahead of the runrate and eventually got out stumped with a clever ball from Jesant and a brilliant stumping by Rohit. At this time Town players thought the game is in the bag. With Jack coming in the next over and bagging a couple of wickets to get them 9 down with about 40 odd runs to get. But then the youngsters on the crease taught us a lesson to not take them lightly. With 45 off 5 overs and last wicket, with nothing to lose Lavender got stuck into the bowlers and started smashing them all over, especially Jack. Now it seemed it could be anyone's game with 12 off the last over. Skipper with consultation of the senior players went to Nischay for the last over, and as he does on most ocassions Nish came through gettnig Lavender the danger man out first ball to give Town a win after another thirlling game.
Though it was a good result, there are a few lessons to be learnt which we should. Never take it easy at any point, try to keep the scoreboard ticking with 1s and 2s if boundaries are hard to come because of the great line and length bowling. That would have meant Town could have gone past 250/260 and had a psychological advantage.
Well done team for giving your best and playing your heart out. Going into the second half with few wins under the belt, feeling a bit confident and hopefully the run continues.
