Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Letchworth Garden City CC 2nd XI on Sat 05 Sep 2026 at 12:00
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 1 wicket
Match report
Northwood Town hosted Letchworth Garden City in the final game of the season, losing the toss and being asked to bat first on a damp wicket.
Nischay Madhavan and Ravi Ramawat made a positive start, putting together a useful opening partnership before both fell after getting themselves in. Nischay made a brisk 20 from 24 balls, while Ravi contributed 10 from 16.
That brought Jesant Halai to the crease, and he produced the standout innings of the day. Jesant showed excellent patience on a difficult wicket, compiling a superb 55 from 111 balls. He was particularly strong through the covers, punishing anything loose and displaying some beautiful strokeplay. Unfortunately, he found little support at the other end as wickets continued to tumble around him.
Suvin Mekwan added 5 and Iqbal Anjum 11, while Rohit Bahl provided a brief burst of entertainment with 7 from just 3 balls, including a boundary. But with Nikhil Nimkar causing plenty of problems, eventually finishing with 4 wickets, Town were bowled out for 119.
There was still plenty of fight to come from the Town bowling attack. Letchworth started aggressively, with Freddy Mullen smashing 36 from just 21 balls, including seven fours and a six. Town struck back, however, with Keval Shah producing an excellent spell of 3 for 15 from his eight overs.
Iqbal Anjum then took centre stage, ripping through the Letchworth middle order with an outstanding 4 for 31 from 10 overs. Jonny Harris made a valuable 30, but Town continued to take wickets and kept the pressure on.
In the end, Letchworth Garden City reached 123 for 9 from 36.1 overs to edge a closely fought contest. Harry Houlder remained unbeaten on 30, guiding his side over the line.
Despite the result, there were plenty of positives for Town to take from the final game of the season. Jesant’s determined 55 was the batting highlight, while Keval Shah and Iqbal Anjum led an excellent bowling effort that pushed Letchworth all the way.
A tough result, but a fighting performance to finish the season.
It was a tough season for Town 1st team. Especially with the lack of availability and quite a few injuries. But the players stuck in, gave their best.
It has been a tough season, with player availability making things difficult at times, but credit must go to everyone who stepped up and gave their best whenever called upon. The team showed plenty of fight and commitment throughout, and there is certainly more potential within this group than the results have shown.
The biggest area for improvement is undoubtedly the batting. Too often we have had players getting good starts and making 30s and 40s, but we need one or two batters to take responsibility, bat deep and turn those starts into match-winning scores. The senior players in particular will need to lead from the front and set the example next season.
With better availability, more consistency and greater responsibility with the bat, this is a team that can perform much better and compete for more wins. The potential is there — it is about turning it into performances.
