Match report NORTHWOOD TOWN lost by 96 rus to near neighbours Rickmansworth, despite skipper David Bushnell producing a storming bowling performance and the hosts having the visitors right on the back foot at one stage.
In damp and freezing conditions, Bushnell elected to take a 'winner takes all' approach and asked the visitors to bat. This seemed to have paid off early on as Bushnell himself and Richard Doling offered little opportunity for the Rickmansworth batsmen to settle. Bushnell was reaping the rewards of increasing pressure as he began picking off the batsmen at regular intervals. Indeed, after 30 overs, the visitors were in desperate trouble at 84-7 and Town were beginning to see sight of their first league victory of the season. Bushnell had remarkably picked up all seven wickets at this stage.
However, throughout the carnage, opener Sohail Bashir had stood firm and he was to ensure that the visitors fought back in impressive style. For Town, Bushnell and Doling's efforts could not be replicated by the support bowlers and loose deliveries were seized upon by the Rickmansworth attack. Mark Robinson in particular played a cameo role with 21 and as Town heads began to drop, Rickmansworth sensed a chance to wrestle the initiative away from the hosts. Dropped chances did not help the Town cause and whilst Doling (3-59) returned to finally capture the final three wickets, the visitors had managed to reach 200. For Rickmansworth, Bashir remained undefeated on 89, whilst for Town Bushnell had produced an impressive 7-83 off 21 overs.
In reply, it was clear from the start that Rickmansworth spirits were high whilst Town needed to pick themselves up to try and force their way back in the game. This never really happened and only opener Richard Robbins (27) and Doling (36) showed any sort of backbone as the hosts were dismissed for a disappointing 104. Gardner took 6-32 for the visitors.
Bushnell was disappointed with the display:
"We started well and should have taken advantage, but a lack of concentration and quality has cost us. Mentally we were knocked by the extra hour in the field and their fightback and we just couldnt produce with the bat. We need to get back to basics and show a level of application throughout a game."
