Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Hertingfordbury on Sat 22 May 2010 at 1.00 pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 12 runs

Match report NORTHWOOD TOWN pulled off a dramatic victory in a low scoring match at Chestnut Avenue, to secure their first league win of the season.

Winning the toss, David Bushnell elected to bat but was horrified to see his top order decimated in no time at all. Bushnell was the first to go but four others followed as the hosts slumped to 28-5. It was looking extremely bleak for Town but Jim Cotton (17) and Shaun O'Neill (26) knuckled down to produce a mature performance and at least keep the hosts in the match. They produced a solid partnership of 40 before the Hertingfordbury bowlers struck again and both were dismissed in quick time. Neal Furmenger finished with an unbeaten 16 not out but Town's final score of 117 meant that it would need a top effort in the field if they were to get anything out of the game.

Furmenger struck in the first over for Town as the visitors innings got off to the worst possible start with a dismissal before a run had been scored. Nevertheless Hertingfordbury settled down and looked in pole position at 78-2. Bushnell had rotated the bowling to try and keep things fresh and it was the introduction of O'Neill (2-2) and Mo Abassi (1-6)that forced a vital breakthrough. Three wickets in little time was soon followed by a brilliant Richard Doling run out and suddenly Town started to believe as the visitors looked nervous on 80-6. The game was certainly in the balance and Bushnell brought himself back on as a spinner following a reoccurence of his hamstring injury. This proved effective and the visitors slumped to 100-9 as the pressure proved too much. It was Bushnell (4-17) who was to secure the welcome victory with Naresh Kumar taking a brilliant catch behind the stumps and Hertingfordbury were dismissed for 105, just 13 runs short of their target.

Bushnell was delighted with the result:
"We worked very hard in the field and kept working even when the match may have looked beyond us. Poor shots nearly cost us again but Shaun O'Neill in particular produced a big performance and it's obviously very satisfying to get that first league win."
