Match report Northwood Town 2nd XI came agonisingly close to picking up another win in a high-scoring game away at Bayford & Hertford II. Stand-in skipper Adam Hills lost the toss and was asked to bat by the hosts on what looked a lovely flat wicket. Hills elected to open the batting himself with the returning Neil Dudley and the pair got Town off to a flying start. Dudley in particular was in no mood to be tied down and took every opportunity to attack with some flamboyant strokes. When Dudley edged behind in the 11th over for 35, Town had already on 62 and Shaun O'Neill joined the skipper at the crease.

The pair have already produced some impressive partnerships when batting together this season and again both looked in good nick with confident calling and some excellent running between the wickets. Hills continued to anchor the innings with some powerful strokeplay as the run-rate remained high throughout. Hills finally scored his maiden century in the 31st over before being bowled shortly after for a score of 111 (17x4, 1x6). The second wicket with O'Neill worth 145. O'Neill fell soon after for a classy 53 and the middle order had a bit of a collapse as the wickets started to tumble. Hills requested his batsman score quickly to enable an early declaration and Jack Daly (20) provided some brief fireworks before the tail scampered some extra runs to allow Hills to declare on 293/9 after 50 overs.

Town started with the old ball and spin which backfired somewhat as the Bayford openers made their intentions clear that they were going to chase the win. But Hills turned to the pace of Mo Abbasi and Viraj Manek who had some joy with the swinging old ball and Manek soon removed both openers to swing the game back in Town's favour. It was the hosts 4th wicket partnership between Kopsis and Brooks which was to have a huge say in the game as the pair took to the Town attack and the score began to accelerate.

In a massive turning point shortly after drinks, Town could and probably should have had both out from a couple of overs from skipper Hills. First Kopsis edged behind but Sumeet Khetia was unable to take the chance and then Brooks was struck plumb in front of middle stump only for the umpire to somehow say not out. The pair took the score towards 200 with 15 overs left and the game looked in the balance. But superb catches from Hills and Dudley removed the pair in quick succession and Town scented victory. Wickets slowly fell but Town were unable to get the final couple of wickets as Bayford innings ended on 265/8.

Viraj Manek (3/51) and Shaun O'Neill (3/64) were the pick of the Town bowlers and whilst Town weren't able force the win, they still picked up a useful 18 points.
